Yuki is about 100+ lbs, a very young adult, and a big goofy puppy! Yuki is very gentle, and when his foster moms Mals try to start a fence fight with him, he just grabs this big toy of his and holds it in his mouth as if to say Nya Nya Nya Nya Nyaaa-Nyaaaa. His previous owner said he was raised around all sorts of animals - big dogs, small dogs, kittens and cats, horses - and is good with all of them. Yuki apparently even used to carry a kitten around with him and appears to still be very cat friendly. Yuki is a GORGEOUS boy and could have easily been a show animal as he has a pedigree but was not registered.
Yuki is now neutered and vaccinated and is now ready for adoption.
Yuki is being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Rest In Peace Jesse, we will see you at the rainbow bridge one day!

Mai Tah is currently still with her owner in Port Townsend, WA.

Ty was originally at the Tacoma shelter but had a microchip from SAC and the Kent Animal Control facility wanted to contact the owner. Turns out the previous owner had signed a release for him, so he is now with us in rescue and available for adoption. Ty is a cutie, looks very friendly and sweet, and is quite the talker. Woo-ing at his rescuers as if to say: Hey, I am NOT supposed to be here, take me home! Ty seems to like any dog he has been around, showed a mild interest in some chickens but was easily redirected (thus MAY be OK with cats), and was a perfect gentlemen with some kids he happened upon while on a walk. Ty walks well on leash, not pulling or lunging. Ty is very food motivated and does not seem to want to do his tricks without knowing food will be forthcoming!
Ty is presently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Mom is a purebred malamute, dad was well, who knows! We are guessing black lab. Most of the pups take after Mom in looks, all take after her in sweetness. Terra is very outgoing and adventurous. All have beautiful thick coats. Adoption fees for these pups are the same as for the adult dogs.
Approved adopters will be required to sign up for a puppy obedience training class which stresses positive reinforcement as a training method. Depending on adoptions location, WAMAL may be able to provide references for excellent instructors qualified and experienced with Arctic Dogs and their unique needs for early socialization and positive reinforcement.
The Pups are all currently being fostered in Monroe, WA.

Strider was recently found as a stray in Olympia and has been pulled from the kill shelter and is now in rescue. We have just taken him into rescue so do not know much about him yet, but we do know that he is a very sweet boy with a beautiful coat, loves to cuddle, appears to know a few basic commands, walks well on leash, and was a love bug with his rescue worker that evaluated and pulled him from the shelter.
Update from Striders foster Mom: Strider is a very big goofy puppy. He loves all people, especially men. He likes to play with his front paws which we are working on. He loves to play with my dogs. He has no idea that he is so big (109lbs). He looks puzzled and backs away when my 50lb. Husky growls at him. He can not understand why anyone would not like him. He is very strong, his arms are all muscle, but he walks well on the leash. He prances when we walk and loves to stop occasionally to get petted. He has a very large head and huge paws. He tries to put both paws up at the same time while sitting and looks exactly like an uncoordinated bear cub. I do not know how he is with cats but he loves children. I would just be careful about having him close to anyone too small to be pawed or leaned on by this big sweet lovable guy. He knows the commands sit, shake, stay, and down. We are working on off and heel. He does not jump on people. He shares the food bowl with other dogs. A picture can not do justice to Striders sweet goofy personality.
Strider is being fostered in Vancouver, WA

Cleo and Ruby have until February 8th to find a home or a foster, or they will be euthanized as the shelter is overflowing. If you or someone you know could cosider fostering one or both of them, please let the shelter know ASAP!
You should really come see me and my sister, Ruby at CASA. We are 2 year old gentle giants and a couple of sweet, playful, beautiful girls. Being that we are sisters and quite attached, it would sure be great if we could be adopted together but, if not, we understand. We do require a fully fenced in yard as our breed tends to wander. Please come pay us a visit. You will fall in love with us.
Cleo is currently located at the Camano Animal Shelter Association

At 12 weeks, Charon is an absolute sweetheart. Charon has always been a bright, outgoing little girl, often one of the first in her litter to venture anywhere or do anything. Although Charons momma is a purebred malamute, she must take after her daddy in looks, who we are guessing is at least part black lab. Her behavior also appears to be following this pattern - she is very calm and affectionate, loving to curl up in her foster moms lap, and lacking some of the notorious difficult tendencies of other mal puppies. Charon is very gentle, she will crawl up to the foster familys 15 month old baby on her belly and give her gentle kisses or often play quietly with her, tolerating baby pets very, very well. Charon is energetic at play, but in the house is very quiet, enjoys quiet time in her crate, is well on her way to being housetrained and is not very mouthy at all compared to most puppies. She has gorgeous soft shiny black fur, with a large white spot on her chest and all of her toes are black/white spotted. Charon stayed with her momma until 6 weeks, then lived with her siblings through 12 weeks, and has been well socialized with puppies and dogs. Charon will do very well as a cherished family dog.
Approved adopters will be required to sign up for a puppy obedience training class which stresses positive reinforcement as a training method. Both Pluto and Charon are very sweet little girls. Charon has always been outgoing and Pluto has really come out of her shell and is a definite little lover - rivaling her sister at this point. Both are very drawn to humans, their siblings, and sticks. Both have learned that mouthing human hands is not a good idea, but they still love to give kisses. Pluto and Charon will crawl up to the foster family's 14 month old baby on their bellies and give her gentle kisses. They really love to be where the action is, but are quite happy in a gated off area indoors as long as there are people nearby who interact with them often. They are fairly quiet - talking sometimes, but they aren't barkers. There's nothing they love more than to sit or stand quietly while someone pets them. Pluto is a gorgeous glossy sleek black with a lovely thick coat, a tiny spot of white on her chest and white toes on her back feet. Charon has a beautiful shiny thick black coat with shorter, downier fur than Pluto, more white on her chest and mottled white and black toes on all four feet. Their mom is a malamute and we don't know who dad was, though we're guessing he was at least part black lab. Both are being well socialized with other puppies and dogs.

Bear just came into rescue from Spokane as an owner surrender. Bear is a VERY sweet young boy who is still growing. Estimated adult size is around 85lbs. Bear seems to get along with other Males and should get along with all females. He is a puppy, in the yard with the other dogs he has that puppy run, sort of loose and not all together yet. Bear is still teething and loves to give puppy kisses, walks well on a leash and does not pull. Bear is a real talker and loves to get into your lap to give chin kisses. Overall Bear is super sweet and a great dog.
Bear is not available for adoption until after he has been neutered (will be scheduled soon) so stay tuned.
Bear is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Sola, the momma of the pups is a purebred malamute. Sola is reported to be one of the sweetest mals ever fostered by this foster family. Sola walks politely on lead, ignores cats, does well with the foster family young children (one is 14 months old). Sola does not fence fight (only growled when she felt her puppies were being threatened, a highly expected reaction from new Malamute moms). Sola is very mellow - great in the house. Sola appears to alrady be house trained. Sola really enjoys being in the house - and we think she would prefer to be mainly a housedog. She loves to jump up on the sofa and just lounge (LOL). Sola is lean, and now that she is no longer pregnant or nursing, she is a little more active, and would probably enjoy hiking, etc. However, she's not at all 'hyper.' She's pretty food motivated, although when free fed when pregnant and nursing, she did not overeat but would leave food in the bowl when she was done. Sola will sit on command and has pretty good manners. Sola is a very easy mal and will make someone an incredibly sweet companion.
Momma Sola is currently being fostered in Monroe, WA.

Nakita is a big beautiful girl who was found as a stray. Although she had tags and her owners were contacted many times, they never came to take her home. She looks to be a fairly young adult and appears to be in good health. She has a softer coat than most Mals so will probably need a little extra brushing from her new owners. Nakita was described by the shelter as a very sweet and quiet girl. When she was picked up by a Wamal volunteer she immediately jumped in the back of the Explorer and after a quick sniff around the back laid right down. Within 15 minutes she was fast asleep in a ball of blankets she had made herself. We will have a better idea of her personality in the next week or so, but so far she seems to be a laid back, mellow, happy, friendly girl.
Nakita appears to be potty trained and used to being in a house. Nakita has shown to be a mellow, extremely sweet girl and is reported to be great with her foster moms two children.
Here is an update from Nakitas foster family:
Nakita is an amazing dog. She has got to be one of the most well mannered and loving dogs I have ever seen, of any breed. She even seems to be ok with my cats! She loves my kids, and gets excited when my daughter comes home from school to play. She has not challenged my fence once. She is just that good. She has only dug a little bit, and I think it was because she was bored. She really should be brushed 2-3 times a week, but it is totally worth it when you feel and smell her soft, silky coat. And she LOVES her belly rubbed. She also gives my husband doggie hugs. And kisses everybody. I love having her here, and I know it will be really hard to let her go because she is so awesome, but she will make someone or some family a completely loving and blissfully happy pet.
Nakita is presently being fostered in Maple Valley, WA.

Chance is very much lucky to be alive. Exposed to Parvo in the outbreak in Crossroads (where the entire shelter was euthanized) he was rescued at the zero hour. He has now completed his ISO hold and has exibited no ill effects and has a clean bill of health and is now ready for adoption! Chance has proved to be an absolute doll! Chance is housebroke, loves walks, cuddling, and being with his family. Chance would make a great house dog and very much deserves a loving family. While Chance is a big boy, he behaves with a gentle soul and loves to please.
Chance is currently being fostered in Bellevue, WA.

Wiley was picked up by a local shelter as a stray. While we do not know a lot about Wiley yet, so far he has shown himself to be a real sweet boy. Absolutely no aggression with his kennel mate - even when they were sharing cookies!
Here is some feedback from his foster mom:
Wiley is a TALLLLLL drink of water. Wonder if someone bred him to be a sled dog? BUT, he walks beautifully on lead (NO PULLING!) and seems to want to either be right next to you -- his shoulder on your thigh, or else ranging directly in front. He is a soft tempered dog (NO YELLING PLEASE), with a playful side and wants nothing more than to be WITH you (same room is fine, he will follow you everywhere BUT into the kitchen!) and is content to lay at your feet or on the couch (he is a mal, right!) He could possibly make someone a wonderful jogging partner (he has a smooth lope) or a family pet (older kids ONLY please, he does not know his own strength or size and uses his paws like a cat!) He howls at sirens, but is not terribly vocal --- unless he has something to say! He was beginning to learn Sit and Down at his temporary foster home, and takes treats GENTLY! LOVES to be loved on and likes to be brushed and combed too. He took right to a 40 inch round dog bed at his temporary foster home (and would love to have the same when he is adopted.) preferably in YOUR bedroom, where he could sleep the night away.
Wiley is being fostered in Cle Elum, WA.

Dugan is big cuddly fluff ball, someone you would love to curle up with on a cold wet northwest night, He has a long bi-color (black/white) coat. Dugie is a happy and friendly dog- a great addtion to your home!
Dugan is listed to help raise awareness for him. Dugan is currently held by PAWS in Lynnwood, WA
PAWS can be contacted at 425.787.2500 or email at info@paws.org.
If contacting them, be sure to mention Dugans ID: 41646
The PAWS Adoption fee for Dugan is $80.

Jenny is no trouble. She is a mellow girl who is pretty quiet, although she likes to talk to you. Jennys former owner died, leaving her and her other 4 companions with a family member as caretaker until he was no longer able to care for them. Jenny had not been socialized much during her life, but she has come a long way. In fact she went from being shy to loving attention. Jenny deserves a forever home where she could have that attention she now loves and would also do well in a home with other dogs. She is unknown with cats.
None of Jennys pictures do her justice. What is truly amazing is that she manages to keep herself clean in the early winter mud - but she does!
Jenny is a mal/sibe mix with the heavier bones of a mal and the spring of a sibe. She would be a good companion to most any dog - she has been a mom so can teach puppies, she has the nenergy and playfulness to match up with young adult dogs and she has the steady demeanor that keeps older dogs from being annoyed. She can also amuse herself if she needs to.
Jenny is in a foster home in Yakima.

Everyone who meets this boy gives him a pat on the head and says:
How ya doin Fluffy?!
And fluffy he is, but he has lived with the name Boots for his whole life so that is what we call him too. We heard from the shelter that Boots has lived most of his life outdoors on the end of a chain, and the condition of his beautiful coat currently reflects that. Once he heals from his recent neuter he will get a really long bath and lots of brushing. His long coat will always require extra care.
A bit of neglect has done nothing to dampen this boys spirit. He loves attention from both adults and kids, knows sit and shake, is house-broken (but might mark his new home at first), is current on all shots, is microchipped, rides well in the car, and walks okay on leash if you are used to walking a powerful mal (translation, he could use a bit of work on leash). Boots does not seem to know about crates and certainly does not like being kenneled. He has missed out on a lot of years of playing and seems to want to make up for lost time.
Boots is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Kiki is completely obedience trained (sit, down, stay, heel, up [into car], come) and has a very sweet personality with people. Kiki is very good on leash, too, and heels well. Kiki appears to be crate trained. Kiki was found as a stray, she was obviously someones pampered pet. She thinks she is a lap dog, although she needs to lose a few pounds! She is very affectionate and loving. Kiki can woo-woo some, but is not by nature a noisy dog at all. In fact, she did not make a peep the entire way to the boarding kennel and simply laid in the back and slept with no problem. Kiki loves riding in the car and seems to be very accustomed to it. Kiki knows how to behave quite well and is very well-mannered with people. Someone put a lot of time into this girls training and she will make a wonderful turn-key pet. The best home for Kiki would be as an only pet and without small kids.
Kiki is currently kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Shyla has energy to BURN and needs a home ready to meet her needs. Here is what her foster mom says of her:
She is so lovable and happy. Loves to play with the other dogs, never out of energy for long and always hungry. She has been real good here. Does not bark at night, has learned how to sit and take treats nicely. She is always ready for love and attention. She needs some place to run and play and it would be nice if she had a play mate.
Shyla was also housetrained by her former owner and has come to us well loved and well adjusted. She can be an escape artist, the main reason her former owner could not keep her, so she will need a very sturdy fence and a companion to keep her occupied so she would not get into trouble like any self respecting malamute puppy will be inclined to do. Shyla would not be a good fit in a home that has cats as she has demonstrated a high prey drive toward them. Shyla will be a big girl (HAS to be when she grows into those ears!)
From Shylas foster mom:
Shyla is adjusting very well to her new digs! She really is quite smart, is learning down (to lay down) and shake (one of Scouts favorites). She is good in the house, it does take her a few minutes to settle down when she first comes in, but I think that is pretty normal for a puppy her age. Also, Shyla is doing GREAT with the kitties. She is curious more than anything, and seems to want to play with them, she is in play mode, not hunt mode around them, and we keep reminding her no kitty. And, the cats do stand up to her, last nite both Blanca and Mocha had Shyla cornered in the kitchen - it was amusing to see her trying to hide from the 2 kitties! :)
She is currently being fostered in Kennewick, WA.

Tia was rescued mere hours before being euthanized. Tia is reported to be a very sweet girl. She is unknown with house cats but showed a bit too much interest in the resident barn cats at her temporary foster home so would likely be best in a home without cats or where they are kept separate. Tia has proven to be an angel with children old and young. You meet her and fall in love, she would LOVE to be the queen at someones home - she must have been once. She loves to cuddle up in lots of blankets and makes sure she always has one for her head! She loves tons of attention and is thrilled to give it back to you.
A volunteer who housed Tia recently says:
She is sooo sweet! She absolutely loves people, some mals are much more interested in other things first, she is ALWAYS interested in people first. Very welcoming to kids of all ages and soo gentle, does not jump on kids etc, just loves their attention. Appears to have been a house dog! I am surprised she has not been adopted! Of course she is quite picky about her doggy friends, much prefers humans over animals!
Tia is presently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Cheyenne loves people and kids and is good with other dogs. Totally house trained, loves to sleep in at night, great in the car too. Lots to recommend this young girl!
Cheyenne is currently being boarded in Maple Valley, WA.

Update: SAVED!
Buddy was pulled from the shelter today and transported to meet a potential adopter. At this time he is only being fostered, but it is possible the foster home may adopt him. Thank you everyone who pulled together so well to save this boy!!!
Buddy has become a permanent resident at the shelter through no fault of his own. His family could not keep him. He is energetic, young, loving to humans and loves the trail. He is in urgent need of a foster home because the Humane Society says they do not want him to stay there any longer. He has been there too long, no life for a dog like Buddy. He will need some training and socialization but he should make a totally loving companion. If you can foster him, please contact us and we can arrange for the transfer to WAMAL and help with his expenses. If anyone can sponsor Buddy, we can take him into rescue. Sponsorship would cost 150 dollars a month to house him at the boarding kennel we use. If you can give Buddy a forever home, please contact the shelter directly.

Ranger is a sweet boy who seems to get along with males and females, kids, adults, and could be a great jogging companion.
The last few weeks of this boys life have been rather traumatic. He was picked up as a stray from an industrial part of Seattle, and was likely on the run for awhile as he weighs only 67 pounds. Definitely on the thin side for a boy this tall! He was a resident at Seattle Animal Control for two weeks during which time he was neutered, received all his shots, and had some dental work done. None of these events have dampened this boys spirits. He is sweet as can be. He loves attention from both adults and kids, and seems to get along with both male and female dogs.
Ranger is now out of the shelter and living with a foster family. We are eagerly awaiting to hear about his new adventures. Stay tuned as Ranger just come into rescue so we will post more soon as we get to know him.

Sampsons family moved and left him and his two canine companions at the shelter. Sampson is 10.5 years old and deserves a forever home where he can spend his last few years in comfort and love. He does not deserve to be in a shelter or in a boarding kennel in rescue.
Sampson needs a quiet home where he can live his final years (which should be at least three and probably more) with love and attention. He is still full of life and has even been on some long hikes with our volunteers. But typical of dignified older gentlemen, he does not want to be jumped on or jostled by other dogs or to be pulled on by little kids, and will express that. He has plenty of love to give and is supremely grateful for any he gets. Seniors in rescue are especially heart breaking for us. Please give this boy a place to live that he deserves.
Sampson is currently kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Molly is currently housed in Parkland WA.

Nanook is housetrained but is now outside only and needs a new home where he can once again be part of the pack.
Nanook is currently living with his owners in Gig Harbor, WA.

Sadie is currently being fostered in Tacoma, WA.

Teton is currently kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Here is what Snowballs foster mom has to say about her:
I just have to report that this young girl is fabulous. She is so sweet and willing to please. She is completely housebroken, sleeps quietly through the night in her crate, and has demonstrated absolutely no destructive tendencies inside or outside. I am sure that any previous destruction was simply due to boredom as this girl has lots of energy to burn. She travels beautifully in the car and was an absolute gem at the groomers yesterday where everyone fell in love with her! She is so smart and learns so quickly - she is already making great strides at the end of the leash and I am certain that her pulling tendencies will be gone in no time. She continues to jump through hoops to please my dogs and is nothing but sweetness to every other dog she encounters. She would play outside all day long if I let her, but she wants a companion - canine or human - to play with. She can be a little bit mouthy with our hands, but given that she is still a young pup that is to be expected, however she stops immediately when told no. She loves to play ball and I am going to try her with a frisbee this afternoon. I have to say that someone will be lucky to have this girl! She needs someone that will give her plenty of exercise and companionship. While she will settle in her crate and can easily be left alone, she definitely prefers to be with others. She is still so young, but with her enthusiasm and intelligence she will easily become a well-mannered part of the family! I cannot stress enough that this girl has loads of love to give! She has no trouble at all with our cats. She has sniffed nose to nose with both of my cats, but other than that she just ignores them!
Snowball is currently being fostered in Seattle, WA.

Jack is housetrained. Listens to sit, come, and no. Has a great demeanor according to his caretakers who list his best qualities as: Super friendly, great with kids, loves to hike. loves to ride in the car.
Jack is currently still living with his owners in North Bend, WA.

Kira is currently up for adoption at PAWS, she will be being pulled by rescue and is now accepting adoption applications. Kira is reported to be as sweet as can be!

This dog was recently found as a stray in the Graham Puyallup area. We have named her Mika for now as it appears to be one of the few names we have tried that she responds to. If you think she might be yours contact us immediately.

Max is currently located at Puget Sound German Shepherd Rescue in Kent, WA.
If interested in rescuing him, please contact the Puget Sound Rescue at Caninencaprinerescue@hotmail.com

Big beautiful sable boys. Not giants, but good sized especially with the extra coat. Big thick legs and feet, beautiful big bear head. Max is definitely showing signs of stress from being at the shelter. His initial reaction was to come up to his evaluator, but as soon as she raised her camera he shied away to the back of his kennel and did not want to look at his evaluator. Some of Maxs stress could be because he is separated from his brother. We have no doubt that these two have probably been together all their lives and are sure they can be kenneled together.
Max will be pulled for rescue and transported to be kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Big beautiful sable boys. Not giants, but good sized especially with the extra coat. Big thick legs and feet, beautiful big bear head. Million was very sweet and came right up to the gate and was very friendly. He did the lean into the gate to feel his evaluators fingers. He made nice eye contact.
Million will be pulled for rescue and transported to be kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Juneau is a sweet boy that had a tough start in life. He needs a home that will give him the love and attention that he deserves. He appears to get along well with other dogs - male and female, but will guard and defend food from other dogs. He is totally sweet with humans. Loves to cuddle and be close. He will need some training on basic house manners as it does not appear he has had any, but he is a quick study and young enough that he should take to training very readily.
Juneau is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

This is from Donna, his foster mom:
Shadow is now at my house. He fit in with the pack right away. He is so sweet but he is not skittish or shy with my dogs. He loves to play and run with them. He needs some fattening up. He loves people and he loves other dogs.
Update from Shadows foster-mom:
Shadow is a sweet, gentle boy. He does not seem to be very interested in cats. He loves to have his tummy scratched. Also he loves to have his chest scratched while he is sitting. If you stop he will put a paw on your arm to ask for more. Otherwise, he is never pushy with humans or other dogs. He loves hugs. He has added weight and is just right. At the dog park he runs and plays with all other kinds of dogs. He likes to spend some time inside with the family but likes to go outside at night because he gets too warm in the house. He minds very well. He has the prettiest big round brown eyes and flying nun ears. I think this boy will fit in anywhere he goes.
Shadow is currently located in Vancouver, WA.

Charlie the Charmer! He is a gorgeous goofball whose ears & nose almost earned him the nickname Prince Charles. But he has FAR too engaging a personality for that moniker. In fact, he has turned out to be a complete charmer and a regular little Boy Toy for his playful female friends.
Charlie is a tall, strong, active and lovable guy with a winning personality and a desire to please. He loves his log doghouse, he loves his yard, he loves his bone, he loves his girlfriends. He is jealous when the dog next door gets attention but he likes all the other dogs in the yard and on walks.
He loves to walk, he loves to be petted, he loves to play, he loves to eat. And he will tell you all this if you just ask! He will talk when he is excited or has something to say but just settles right down when left alone.
Like all malamutes, Charlie the Charmer does not fawn all over you, but he is also strongly people-oriented and attentive to his surroundings and he is very, very responsive. Give him attention and training and you will have a delightful, loving, active companion for life. Charming Charlie is just waiting to be that special someones Northwest companion for whatever kind of activity you like. Bring it on!

Nakia is a lover. He gets along great with older children and all dogs, and only seems mildly interested in cats, but he will walk away if they arch and hiss. He wants to be near his humans, snuggling on the bed, walking in the park, or just sitting together, but he can also amuse himself if left alone. He came to us because his former owners did not have an enclosed yard and he was stalking the neighbors chickens and goats. With this in mind, he should always be supervised around small animals.
Nakia has no food or toy aggression at all, and loves to fetch, of all things! His favorite toys are a squeaky ball and a long stick. He will keep going after them as long as someone is willing to keep throwing them.
He does not dig or challenge fences, is very easy to walk on a leash, seems to be housetrained, and is not a very noisy or destructive dog. He does not particularly like to be kenneled. We are working with him on his manners. He knows sit, come, no, and do not put your feet on me, but he has so much energy sometimes it takes a minute to get him to settle down.
Nakia has a very loyal, happy-go-lucky attitude. Everyone who has worked with him comments about what a sweetheart he is!
Nakia is currently fostered in Maple Valley, WA.

We were told by Animal Control that Forrest barked a lot. Likely he did bark when there since it was the first time he had ever been confined or away from home. Here in his foster home, he is not a barker, or much of a digger. He sleeps, spends late evenings and feeding times in his kennel and settles right in several times a day without a peep. He barks only the normal times you would expect a puppy to bark - when he is trying to tell you he is hungry or he is wondering why everyone else is out in the yard and he is left in the kennel. I would bark too.
Forrest IS a puppy and turns anything into a toy. Then he gathers his toys and blankets in one spot and sleeps on them. He is playful, athletic, will do very well in school and will be a fabulous companion for play, family or an athletic person who wants an outdoor - summer and SNOW companion! This little boy is as sweet as a donut.
Forrest is currently being fostered in Cle Elum, WA.

IF THIS BOY DOES NOT STEAL YOUR HEART AT FIRST GLANCE, YOU HAVE NO HEART! This gentle giant stepped into the volunteers car (when she picked him up at the vet where he was neutered) as though it was the most natural thing in the world to be doing. The vet staff RAVED about this dogs behavior and gentle way and all wanted to adopt him. Even a young mal (4 mos) patient that came in, approached him and was greeted warmly with tail wagging and great gentleness!
At his temporary foster home, he fit in like a hand in a glove, socializing with all the resident mals, individually and collectively, and separately with the TWO wirehair fox terriers as well!
This is a happy, loving boy! More Super Tanker than speedboat, he would make a wonderful, wonderful companion for someone who is passionate about animals, and loves Nordic breeds. The shelter staff said the person who turned him in stated he wandered into her house and stayed for three days (she could not keep him because of his size and not having a fence --- or else she would have!) making himself at home and SLEEPING WITH HER CATS! This in one EXCEPTIONAL MAL!
Chewey is currently being fostered in Puyallup, WA.

Glaciers owners have had other malamutes earlier in their lives and used their experience to raise Glacier to be a family pet.

URGENT- MISSING MALAMUTE IN COUGAR MOUNTAIN AREA, Issaquah, WA
Here is the report from Nikos owners:
We lost our gray/white, open-faced, Alaskan Malamute, named Niko (Nee-koe pronounced with a long O) at about 11:00 p.m. this evening in the Cougar Mountain neighborhood of 18425 SE 64th Way, Issaquah, WA, 98027. He has a gold, bone shaped ID tag on his blue Martingale color with all of our phone numbers, e-mail address, and street address information on it. He is also micro-chipped with our ID and the ID of the Bellevue Humane Society. (See pictures, below.) He is also up-to-date on all of his shots. Please call, 425-747-5954 (home), or 425-829-6902 (cell), if you see, know of, or find him.
Niko is completely friendly, and will not bite, or become aggressive at all, if approached. He may be shy and step back from you; but if he hears his name and you approach him with an open palm, he will probably try to come to you, if at all possible. He truly is a very wise, gentle spirit, and loves people (including children).
He can be aggressive toward other dogs he does not know, or if he feels threatened by dogs, so please do not allow Niko near any other dogs, if possible. He will never be aggressive toward people, as he loves people. He knows all obedience commands exceptionally well. If you tell him, It's OK, Niko, and approach the Flexi-lead handle to untangle him from whatever he may be hung up on, he will cooperate. If you do not feel comfortable approaching him, please just call us immediately, and we will come untangle him (if this is the case) and bring him home.
If anyone finds him, has even seen him, or perhaps knows the general vicinity of where he may be, PLEASE CONTACT US, IMMEDIATELY! We will come to get him, instantly. Please give us the chance to collect Niko, prior to calling any animal control officer. We have to get his medication to him, ASAP. We have contacted all of the local shelters and animal control, as well as the Sheriffs Department, in the event someone has reported him, or he has been picked up, or turned in.
Please contact us, if you know anything. We can also be contacted privately for his microchip number, if needed:

We recently pulled Bandit from a local shelter where he was turned in by his owners.
It seems Bandit found chasing cats to be highly stimulating. He was OK with cats in the house but chased them when outside but this could have been very dependent on the temperament of the cat. He therefore needs a home without cats in which his energy is expended by jogs and hikes. His paperwork from the shelter says that he is housebroken, good with children and other dogs. He was well behaved in the car on the ride to the kennel and seems to be a really sweet boy.
He needs a secure yard since, as is typical of many smart but bored malamutes, he loves to figure out ways to escape. He would probably be less escape motivated if he was not left alone for long periods of time or he had another doggie companion. If you have room in your pack for this friendly, playful, and talkative malamute, please contact us.
Bandit is currently being fostered in Seattle, WA.

Kayak is a sweet, shy gentle guy. He was terrified in the shelter - had possibly never been out of his home before - but has blossomed in a normal backyard around other dogs. He does not like the times when he has to be kenneled but settles down, only barking occasionally.
Kayak is submissive and seems to be quite hand-shy. He will require some gentle handling and may require slow introductions to new things. He is a one-owner dog and was said to have been raised by a couple and with cats but not with children. We see no reason why he would be a problem with children but there appears to be no experience there either.
He is getting along great with all of the dogs in his foster moms yard - we will update as we know more.
Kayak is currently being fostered in Cle Elum, WA.

Rose just came into rescue. Here is what the volunteer that brought her in said about her:
Rose is the SWEETEST little girl in the world! She loves EVERYONE! The minute she sees you, the tail wags! She spent the entire 125 miles ride in the back seat with her head resting on the my shoulder! getting kisses on her ears and giving them on my ears, cheek and chin! She has the softest fur, she definitely is a wooly, and knows a few commands like sit, but not really sure she wants to take the time away from hugs to do it!
Rose is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

The Wolfman needs a jay oh bee. This boy is a mal-sibe-and? mix who appears to have been bred for pulling. His body is designed for racing and he has the tremendous strength that will make him an excellent weight-puller. He is tall and longlegged - 28 inches - has one blue eye and loves to go!!
The Wolfman had some tough times in early life that left him starved and with a few fears. Fortunately, his foster mom is an experienced dog handler and has helped him get through those earlier fears. He now handles well on a leash... well, as long as you are ready to keep moving!
With his strong athletic build and drive and energy, he will make an excellent sled dog or skijoring partner. He would also do well if you like to do cross country skiing or running or both. He is not a dog that would do well as a house pet only. He will need lots of exercise and a job to do in order to stay content. He likes people and has played well when he has had the opportunity but we do not have experience with him on the loose with other dogs or on a team. (We just do not know.)
So, if you are a dedicated athlete and would like a power dog to work with you, or a would like to add some power and speed to your sledteam, you will want to interview Wolfman Jack for the job!
The wolfman is presently being fostered in Spokane, WA. Transport to Western Washingtin can be arranged.

Why is a black lab on our website you might ask. Snowflake (see the snowflake on her chest) was born 11/8/04 to a purebred Alaskan Malamute mother who came into rescue due to deliver. Its anybodys guess who Dad was, but we think a black lab. She has the gorgeous eyes and the big feet of a malamute, and a bit of the devil in her personality, very playful. Snowflake was part of the Planet Puppy litter, she and all her siblings had celestial names, and was named Pluto until she was adopted. Snowflake needs a new home. Her current home is starting a day care and Snowflake, being a 6 month old puppy, is just too much for real young kids. She is a sweetheart though and just needs some time and training. She is currently living in Lynnwood, WA.

Wiley is being fostered in Maple Valley, WA.

Cassie is a very sweet gentle girl. She does not need to have a raised voice or raised hand to do what you wish. A gentle touch, lots of hugs and many kisses will bring you great rewards of devotion and loyalty! Despite all that she may have been through, she will bond readily and willingly to someone who shows her respect and caring.
She has obviously come from a deprived background both from a nutritional standpoint and from an attention standpoint as well. As she comes to accept a new home as her forever home some of that neediness for attention will abate and she will become more confident and more outgoing. This dog is NOT a candidate for an outdoor kennel 12 hours a day, she wants to be with you. A companion dog would also be nice for her as well. She is NOT an ALPHA female, and should not be exposed to one as she is quite submissive and could wind up being injured by a female intent upon exerting position.
Her prey drive seems to be readily triggered by small running, furry things like CATS and Squirrels, but did not demonstrate the same behavior with small dogs, despite their jumping in her face and snapping. She may be able to be with HOUSE cats, but care still must be taken lest they run and she chases.
She LOVES to play and bats at things with her paws and uses them a great deal like a cat so be careful with children. As with all large dogs, she can hurt when she does not intend to do so.
Cassie deserves a forever home and will give back more than she gets.
Cassie is currently blowing coat, so excuse her undressed appearance. He coat will come back in full splendor soon!
Cassie is being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Tomeko is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Allie is definitely a laid-back mellow kind of gal. She's shown no desire to dig out in the yard. She shows no house training though at this point but she will learn quickly. She has shown no desire to go after the cats at her fosterhome, and the cats ignore her. Allie is still a little shy, and needs to learn some skills to help boost her confidence. A bit on the timid side right now, but she has a heart of gold!
Allie is currently being fostered in the Spokane area.

Chance and Crooner are both young boys who have never been separated, but could be. They are very good at keeping each other company. They are playful but also very calm and easy-going. Since they have a cold, they have not yet been introduced to other dogs in a playyard. They may be MalaSibes, with some Alaskan Malamute and some Siberian Husky parts. They are wonderful with people, and are said to be wonderful with children as well but would not be good candidates for home with tiny dogs or cats.
Chance is underweight. Could call them Jack and Jill, except they are both boys. They are as sweet as their faces make them seem.
Chance is currently being fostered in Cle Elum, WA.

Mieka is currently with her owners in Issaquah.

Mika is currently at the Whatcom Humane Society, people interested in her should contact the shelter at 360-733-2080 or outreach@whatcomhumane.org

Cooper is neutered and current on all shots.
From Coopers foster mom:
Cooper is one of the most mellow mals I have ever fostered. Nothing seems to faze this boy. He is gentle around children and other dogs, even the smallest ones he encounters on the trail. He seems okay with kitties, but is never allowed to interact with them unless he is on leash. He does not mind an alpha female and actually seems to roll his eyes as if to say WHATEVER! when his foster sister Paloma pushes him around. Cooper is a stocky boy. He pulls more than I like on leash unless we are headed up a steep trail, in which case he really prefers that I lead and do the pulling! Smart boy! If I had to pick one word to describe Cooper, it would be GRATEFUL as he seems to treasure anything and everything that comes his way. Some of his favorite things are walks, hikes, tummy rubs, being brushed, hanging out with a new bone, ice cream cones, car rides, digging a new hole, and the wide open spaces of a fenced yard. You have to meet him to really appreciate this gentle boy.
Cooper is currently being fostered in Seattle, WA.

LAST CALL TO SAVE A LIFE! We received an e-mail from Melissa at the Kitsap Human Society. It was a last plea for help for Clyde. They have had him for some time now and if a foster home cannot be found for him his life will end very soon.
Clyde is a beautiful boy and thought to be older. If you can foster Clyde or know anyone who can help, please contact Melissa at the Kitsap Human Socient ASAP - byrdnest-4@wavecable.com.
We have met Clyde in person and he is a beautiful boy and would make someone a wonderful companion. Please consider helping this boy if you can.
We are desperate. We have no room - not even in the boarding kennels. We are leaving dogs in shelters - young and old - and this is the result.
Clyde is currently located at the
Kitsap Humane Society

Clyde appears to be housebroken, and has been very good at all the adoption sites he has gone to. If your looking for an older Mal mix, this boy is for you!
Please contact the shelter directly if interested in him, his ID at the shelter is 05-3301. We at WAMAL are just listing him on our website to help raise awareness for him. If you adopt him, please let us know as we would be happy to help with any post adoption advice. If you are interested in fostering Clyde, please let us know so we can pull him into rescue.
Here is a note from a volunteer that works with Clyde:
I took him with me yesterday to a place where he could run around and be a dog all day. He loved it. He has such a great personality. I also found out that he knows: sit, down, and shake. He is such a sweetheart. So cuddly too.

Venus would be best as an only dog, although she is friendly to the ones she meets, she is very dominant to those that share her household. Because of her size, a strong healthy adult needs to be in charge of her leash.
Venus is currently with her owner in Redmond, WA.

Sasha was rescued from a neglectful situation by a college student who does not have the space or the time (once back in school) for a young pup. She would like to see Sasha go to a home where she will get the patient training and loving attention she deserves. Sasha is learning to be housetrained. An adopter would need to continue with that training. She is very responsive to praise. Sasha is not yet available for adoption since she is not yet spayed. She is currently in Federal Way but we hope to have her in a foster home soon.

Keenan does not want to be left out of anything. When I put my shoes on he gets excited, and just picking up the leash causes unbounded joy. He loves to be outdoors, but is happy inside as well. He is very athletic and energetic, but also mellow when appropriate. He does not need attention as much as he needs to be close. His favorite place to lay down is anywhere as long as his head is on my feet. He mouths a bit, but never bites. He wants to play with all dogs, and sometimes it gets a little rough. He also plays so well with some dogs that I can just sit and watch them forever. They have so much fun and it is animated and gentle at the same time. He knows some commands, and we are working on more. He does not seem to know come very well, but if I say lets go he comes right away. He does not challenge fences, even short ones. He loves the water, and might be part seal or otter. He does not swim very far, mostly in circles. Very sweet dog who just wants to be loved, and gives it right back.
Keenan is beign fostered in Bellevue, WA, and in Bend, OR - and is a good traveller in the car

Crooner came into rescue with his young littermate brother. They had never been separated but Chance has since been adopted. Crooner now gets to join his foster moms pack - day and night - and he has been very very good with that pack! He is a gentle soul and generally a quiet dog. Since he is still overweight he does not move very fast yet (but improving!)
That can be deceptive when you go for a walk, however, as Crooner is very strong!
Crooner is very calm, easy-going and wants nothin more than to be a full member of a family. He has a strong prey drive and is not a candidate for a home with cats or tiny dogs. Crooners owners said was wonderful with children as well as adults, which seems very likely. Probaly lick you to death if you give him the chance.
He may be MalaSibe, with some Alaskan Malamute and some Siberian Husky parts.
Crooner is currently being fostered in Cle Elum, WA.

Kody and Kiana came in together and can be adopted separately or together. They are gorgeous dogs. They are easy to handle, walk beautifully on leash, have classic malamute coats, and wonderful temperaments. Both dogs will be excellent companions for an active Northwest family in or out of snow but both are somewhat laid back and easygoing as well. Kody is more reserved than Kiana. We believe they have experience with children as they were family dogs, however, neither Kody nor Kiana is a candidate for homes with cats.
Kody is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA

Daytona is a very sweet young boy. He loves to play with the other dogs, and does best with female dogs. He has a beautiful coat and gorgeous big brown eyes. He loves to play keep away with his toys. On hot days he runs to the horses water trough and jumps in. He is very smart and catches on well to new games and tricks. He still has some puppy tendencies, but chewing is not one of them. He is not difficult to train and he will make a wonderful, rewarding dog to someone who is willing to take the time to teach him. He is not recommended for a house with cats.
Daytona is affectionate with people and will lay at your feet and nap while you visit with guests. He does not jump on people or growl at them, he just greets them nicely and returns to the feet of the person who cares for him. Daytona will make a wonderful, loyal pet for someone who has time to work with him while he is young. Daytona is being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA

Risa is good with children and she loves other dogs according to her shelter notes. Risa is polite, friendly, and she loves to be petted. When we learn more about Risa we will update her listing. A WAMAL volunteer evaluated her at the shelter and said:
Risa is a sweet heart. I poked and pulled and pushed her around. Stuck my hand in her mouth and picked her up and she never made a sound. She needs to be groomed to get rid of her under coat. I was able to pull a lot of it out without complaint. She is smaller but has the power of a mal when walking on a leash. She looks good health wise and weight wise. She doesn't jump or bark. But her previous owners turned her in for escaping. She looks very sad in the shelter kennel.
Risa is being boarded in Spokane, WA.

If interested in Bear please contact his foster mom Michele directly at malkr8@teleport.com
Bear is currently being fostered in Dallas, OR (just outside of Salem)

Meet Peggy, she is an absolute love of a dog. Peggy hhas the longest eyelashes we have ever seen on a dog. If you look closely at her photos, you can see them. Peggy is good around small kids, in the house and in the car.
Peggy will crate up, but does not like it a lot yet, but were working with her on that. Peggy will follow you around everywhere and not run off. Peggy is a little iffy at times with other dogs, which is very typical for female Malamutes. Peggy just seems to like some and then others she needs to tell them who is boss. Mainly Peggy is a very nice, sweet natured dog who would be a good pet to almost anyone. Once she bats those lashes at you, you will want to take her home!
Here is note from her current foster Mom:
Peggy has settled in wonderfully here - she and Scout get along great. She has been learning some manners and obedience. Peggy does like to try to steal YOUR food if you leave it unattended. We are working with her on that. Peggy has learned a few commands already like SIT, lay DOWN, and she does walk on leash as well as any mal can. Peggy seems to really like truck rides too. Peggy is good in the house, with no accidents or issues so far, except being tag teamed by the kitties so she tries to hide! Peggy has done really well with the cats - remember though, my cats are dog savvy. She tries to chase, but when she is told NO KITTY she comes to you. She does seem to want to play with our cat Blanca who will initiate interaction with the dogs. Blanca has swatted Peggy pretty good a few times now and Peggy backs off and goes her own way. Peggy takes treats nicely and she has a gentle mouth. When we have Peggy off leash outside of the fenced yard she stays on the property and unlike most malamutes does not seem to want to wander. She will go to the end of the driveway, but when you call her she comes right back.
Peggys foster home has rave reviews of Peggy. She went on a family reunion camping trip. Here is what they had to say:
Peggy did great for what might be her first time camping. The worst thing she did was roll in fresh moose poop - she had to have a cold bath in the creek so we could be around her :) Everyone at the family reunion LOVED her, and she was great with the kids. She enjoyed the creek behind the cabin, she liked wading in the water. Peggy still behaves well with the cats. She likes any toys, but her favorite is a squeaky ball or squeaky stuffed toy (we call them babies). I hope these new photos will help make a difference for her, she is such a sweetheart!
Peggy is currently being fostered in Kennewick, WA - near the Tri-Cities area of Eastern Washington.

Rocky is so big and strong - and so young - that he worried us when he was in the shelter because he was very hyper during interactions with shelter staff. But as soon as he got a little personal attention, got out of his tiny kennel and got into a foster home he has turned into a different dog! He is calm in his foster home, thinks the pesky siberians are just fascinating. He is very smart and is already learning the rules of the road for a good doggie life. In his foster home he gets kennel time, yard time, personal attention and basic training. His foster parents just love him. He has an easy-care coat and the strength to move mountains - with his body and with his big heart too.
Rocky is currently being fostered in Yakima, WA.

Kodiak is currently with his owners in Wenatchee, WA.

Kiana is one of those gorgeous dogs we just love getting in rescue. Kiana is easy to handle, walks beautifully on leash, has a classic malamute coat, and a wonderful temperament! Kiana will make for an excellent companion for an active Northwest family in or out of snow but is still somewhat laid back and easygoing as well. We believe Kiana has experience with children as she was origionally a family dog before finding her way to rescue, however, Kiana is a candidate for a home with cats.
Kiana is currently being fostered in Spanaway, WA.

Koda loves to play, still has some puppy because likes to mouth, but it is a very soft mouth. She will start to bat you around with a set of paws that are huge. So she just needs a little training. She knows sit but that is about it. She listens well, so should learn quickly. She walks very well on the lead, rides like a champ.
Koda loves people. She spent an afternoon at Pet Fest and must have been petted by 50 people from 2 year olds to people in wheel chairs and treated them all the same. She was in around or confronted by a like number of dogs and she had no problems.
She needs to go to a home without cats or small dogs.
Here is a note from one of the rescue volunteers about Koda:
Took Koda out for a bit last night and I am always so surprised at how sweet this girl is......she really LOVES to get out of that kennel but is soooo good about going back in.....what a doll she is!! Jared had her on leash for a bit and she does ok after she gets over the excitement about being out, she really likes kids so I hope she goes somewhere where there is a kid or two for her to play with! LOL She is going to make someone a wonderful companion to be sure.
Here is a recent note from Kodas foster home:
Koda is doing extremely well in the back yard with Hayden (lab/husky mix). They love to play tug of war and chase each other around the yard. Koda knows that when Hayden lays down near the fence that it is time to rest and she wanders over to play in the wading pool. She loves to be given great big hugs and she returns the gesture with kisses. She is a pleasure to walk and groom. She is unaware of her large size and so she should not be left alone with small children or animals. She is a very affectionate dog that loves companionship. She will not be suited as a back yard dog that can be left alone she needs her people. She does not challenge the fence at all and does not bark. She loves to sit and watch the kids next door play on the swings and chases the water from the sprinklers. She stays outside by her self in a large dog run at night. If left alone in the yard she gets bored and lets you know she wants in. She has no problem being left in the run for long periods of time alone but if there is activity she wants to be part of it. She comes into the house for visits but does not stay in long due to the heat and her large size. She just can not find a good place to lay down. I do not know how she would do with cats.
There is some minor food agression mostly because Hayden eats slower and does not like Koda watching her.
I feed them separatly and Koda has no problem with me reaching in to take her dish even if she is not done. She knows basic commands such as come, sit, and leave it. She come when you whistle and is learning how to give toys back. She is a wonderful dog that will make an awesome companion to someone who has the time for all her enrgy and love.
Koda is currently in Spokane.

Momma was a malamute, Daddy was a dawg, possibly an Aussie. ShyAnne and her brother Shadow have beautiful malamute coloring and marking and the malamute woo-woo. But just a bit of something else too and ShyAnne is smaller and more delicate-seeming than the normal malamute. She is, however, quite an agile an energetic puppy - all the way. She loves to play, can get in and out of, well, trouble! but did not challenge a four foot fence, undoubtedly because she did not want to as she surely could have. ShyAnne gets along with EVERY single dog around, loves the pool. Now that her brother has left, she will bark at strangers - that is the Aussie in her. But she is not at all aggressive - no teeth baring or other protector actions. She is just become the local alarm system. ShyAnne has been separated from her brother Shadow so she can learn about life on her own, outside the nursery of a backyard. She is skittish but improving hourly. ShyAnne has too much energy to be left alone for long and will do really well with another dog or with family members home or in an active household where he can be entertained - and entertain you!
ShyAnne is currently being fostered in Cle Elum, WA.

Very sweet disposition, seem to get along with all other dogs and people. Just came to rescue and we'll know more later!
Kaila is currently being cared for in Spokane, WA.

CodieBear and Missy came to rescue together. The two of them are litter mates who turned up in the shelter system after escaping the yard. Their previous owner is now unable to contain them and they need to find a new family who can care for them. In return they are very extremely friendly, loving and enjoy human companionship, usually greeting our volunteers with an enthusiastic woooo woooo woooo!
Both Codie Bear and Missy are very well behaved and mellow for their young age. They love to play, be around people and will be great dogs for the right family. They have lived with children, cats, other dogs and are very bonded with each other. Ideally they will find a new home where they can live together.
The two of them have wonderful personalities - loving, playful, get along very well with other dogs. It is a joy to watch them play together running in the yard or lazing around in their kennel or splashing in the pool. They are young, energetic and don't look at all alike except they have matching golden eyes.
They will bring a lot of joy to any family who adopts them together. We are not yet sure if they can be separated. We have started putting them with other dogs but they haven't spent any significant time apart. But much of the joy of fostering these two has been seeing them together.
CodieBear and Missy are currently being fostered together in Cle Elum, WA.

Malakhi is a neutered male returned to the shelter because his family is moving. His relinquishing family describes him as friendly, playful, active with a huge personality. He has lived in a family with children under the age of 6 and older children from 6-12. Very tolerant of children and reacts to other dogs as friendly and playful. He has lived as an indoor/outdoor dog and has been left both inside and outside alone during the day. He was left alone for as many as 10-12 hours a day. He loves to ride in the car, is not food aggressive, has never bitten a person or injured another animal.
Our volunteer spent a little time with him in a visiting area and he seemed very friendly although somewhat aloof - until he saw a family with small children walking by outside the kenneled area! Then he got excited, woo wooing at the kids and wanting to join them. He has had no training at all and doesn't even seem to know your basic sit or come commands.

Annie is house trained and has been a loyal pet. She has not been allowed to run loose with other dogs so we don't know how she will be. Our guess is she would need to be kept separated at first. She is not safe with cats.
She needs a place to go until we can find a more permanent solution.

Anya is an absolute sweetheart!! She had a a traumatic beginning to her life. She was found as a skittish, starving stray but is starting to now come out of her shell with some kindness and love. Here is what her foster owner has to say about her:
She has been great with my kids, (2 1/2 and 5). She has not shown much interest in my cats, unless they run. However we did introduce her to one of them carefully and she licked his face. She is even good with the horses. She is quiet, only howls if she feels lonely or is upset when I take her foster neighbor out or am playing with him, of course she lets me know she wants that attention too. She is not food motivated at all, but does very very well with praise. She is very soft tempered and does extremely well with encouragement. When she gets nervous she pees. Anya will not do well with discipline. Discipline will scares her. She knows sit and comes when I call her. Loves being around people and loves to give kisses to just about everyone including other dogs. She gets along with both my male dogs, even the small one, whom she loves to play with. I supervise as she is a bit big for him and does not quite understand her strength. The other one growls at her and she ignores him.
She loves to run (and boy can she run) and play, not once has she tried to jump on anyone of us, or the kids which is amazing given she is so young. She has wonderful manners. She blossoms daily and appears to be more and more confident. She has been an absolute joy to have here.
Anya is currently being fostered in Redmond, WA.

Mafia (her real name) is a sweet malamute that doesn't understand why she's here. Her owners moved into a smaller house and she's used to having acreage to run on. Her new yard doesn't fit her activity level and she needs something more. She's not extremely tolerant of smaller children so would do best in a home with older kids. Her previous home only had grandkids that visited once in a while. She slept indoors at night and was out during the day. Weight is only an estimate from pictures, will hopefully update with known weight soon.
If interested in Mafia, please contact us or the shelter at:

Momma was a malamute, Daddy was a dawg, possibly an Aussie. Shadow and his sister ShyAnne have beautiful malamute coloring and marking and the malamute woo-woo. But just a bit of something else too! Shadow is an energetic puppy - all the way. He loves to play, can get in and out of, well, trouble! but did not challenge a four foot fence, undoubtedly because he did not want to as he surely could have. Shadow gets along with EVERY single dog around, loves the pool. He will bark at strangers - that is the Aussie in him. But he is not at all aggressive - no teeth baring or other protector actions. He is just your local alarm system. Shadow has been separated from his sister ShyAnne and moved into town so that he could learn about life on his own, outside the nursery of a backyard. He has been a big scared but improves every single day. He has too much energy to be left alone for long and will do really well with another dog or with family members home or in an active household where he can be entertained - and entertain you!
Shadow is currently being fostered in Spanaway, WA.

Malibu is the perfect companion for a loving home looking for a not-too-high-energy mal. She is perfectly content to lie about while you go off to work, but she definitely wants to be with you when you're around. She will follow you everywhere in her efforts to be loved on, but she's not obnoxious about it. So, she will sit beside you and lean in for all the snuggling she can get. She is very sweet and gentle. Despite being literally smothered with love by teenagers, Malibu has never been anything but patient with them. Moreover, she has shown no aggression at all toward her two feline housemates (but, she is never left unsupervised with them). She has not demonstrated much interest in joining the canine pack, rather she tends more toward human companionship. Once she gets over her initial enthusiasm for an outing, she will settle in nicely on her leash and enjoy a pleasant walk with you. She is fairly low-key and not too interested in high levels of activity. She just wants to be with her people! She travels beautifully in the car. She does have her share of strong-willed female tendencies, but with a firm and consistent leader, Malibu is a wonderful and loving companion. Malibu is being fostered in Seattle, WA.

Quicksilver may look different than our other malamutes because she is all white, but her personality is pure Fe-Mal. She is a quick study, and responds well to obedience training. She knows sit, down, wait and stay. She will absolutely work for food, and bonds well with our volunteers. During her walks she likes to stop along the way to sample the blackberries, and chase a mole or two. She is very inquisitive, and likes to explore everything. She is a good digger, and her intelligence combined with her ingenuity will require a solidly contained yard. She is high energy, loves to hike, run, and as soon as she has access to a ball she has dropped it at your feet for a game of fetch. She loves all people, kids included, and flips over for belly rubs. She likes to sing to you when you arrive. She tolerates other dogs on walks and on neutral territory, but can be territorial on what she deems to be her own turf. Like most malamutes, she is possessive about her toys and food. She is most likely best suited as an only dog, or possibly could be placed with a dominant male that won't put up with too much of her bossiness. She has lived with a cat in the past, but she shows considerable interest in small critters. She will be an ideal companion for someone with an active lifestyle and a true appreciation for the breed. Since meeting, Quicksilver and Nanook have taken quite a liking to each other and have asked us to mention that they would really like to go to a forever home together. They even promise not to get into too much trouble together!

Nanook is a large, friendly, playful young male, full of energy and spirit. He is well mannered for his age and has certainly had some training, but will need more from his new family as he grows and learns what is expected from his human caretakers. He is very friendly towards people, but is not aware of his size or strength, so his enthusiasm can exert itself in a rough and tumble way. Nanook loved playing with a ball and kong toy, tossing it in the air himself to chase if it wasnt thrown fast enough to his liking, then prancing around as he chomped proudly on his catch. Simply put, Nanook is a fun, goofy and energetic puppy in a large malamute body.
Although we did not come across any critters on our walk, he exhibited a strong sense of prey drive, showing intense curiosity to animal noises in the woods and was not sure what to make of the horses in the corral next door. We didnt find any cats brave enough to test his reactions with, but I would hesitate to suggest such an experiment to be a good idea. He showed great enthusiasm towards another female Mal that came along on his walk, but his excitement and exuberance, combined with his size when he approached made her nervous. He will need an introduction to any potential K9 siblings prior to placement in a new home.
Nanook is all things a rambunctious young Mal should be, and will make a wonderful addition to a family looking for a true Mal. He would be best placed in a household without young children due to his size and energy, and would be well suited for an active family that will take him on hikes, walks and other outdoor Malamute adventures. Since meeting, Quicksilver and Nanook have taken quite a liking to each other and have asked us to mention that they would really like to go to a forever home together. They even promise not to get into too much trouble together!

Libby is very laid back, is very loving, and will follow you around like a puppy. She has a gorgeous coat, gorgeous face and very expressive eyes. She also has a beautiful voice and if you work at it, you can get her to talk to you. Libby asks for affection and is immediately responsive when you join her in the yard - she wants to play but is not so good at it because she is a chubbette right now. She will be much more comfortable when she loses a little weight. Once you leave, Libby says: ah well, and just lays down to enjoy the day.
Libby has lived with female dogs and with dominant males but is wary of strange dogs. She has also been a family dog and has often been around children. She does not seem to have any bad people habits at all! We think she will make a wonderful companion and family dog.
As Libby just came into rescue, more details will be coming soon.
Libby is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

He is very playful he is definitely all puppy. Hes learned many manners from his companion foster dogs but he really needs his own home to learn what its like to be part of a family. He will be a wonderful activity or family dog with a coat ready-made for snow but not too heavy for summer play.
Trooper is also stunning. His sable/tan undercoat ripples through his black guard hairs when he moves; and he moves beautifully!
Trooper is well under a year old - possibly only 8 months or so. His forever home will be a family or individual who wants a dog as part of the family, with plenty of inside time and attention and a nice fenced yard.

Sargeant is a beautiful Malamute & German Shepherd mix. He is a powerful dog, with a huge affectionate personality. He loves all 2 legged creatures he meets, toddlers, mail carriers, security guards, store clerks. He is a young dog, so naturally curious and exuberant. He follows his foster mom around, and enjoys hanging out with her - especially in the kitchen. His beautiful warm brown eyes literally shine with affection, and he smiles. He comes when called, understands and responds to: leave it, lets go, no, back, move and sit. We are working on stay and not pulling during walks. He heels pretty good after we have walked for a time. He is so happy when he anticipates food and walks - he literally dances with joy!
Sargeant does not jump on anyone - he will patiently sit by you waiting to have his head stroked. He was very patient with his foster mom combing out his winter fur during the last month. He is not destructive or a digger. He calms right down and stays well in the back yard when I leave. He loves his dogloo, and retreats to it when he is tired, or its raining. He is house trained, but has not spent much time alone inside. He rides beautifully in the truck. He was not used to cats, so has been kept separate from the cats in his foster home for their safety. He no longer barks at them, but he needs a feline free home. Although he was friendly with other foster dogs when originally coming into rescue, he appears to be selective about his doggie friends at this time. Sargeant would like a forever home with active caring adults, and he would love older children. He would like to be your dog if you have room in your heart and home for him.
Sargeant is currently being fostered in Olympia, WA.

Juno lives with his family in Snohomish Washington and is loved very much, but due to circumstances his owners are trying to find him a great new family to live with. Juno is not an oldster by any means and we would really like to see him with a loving, easygoing family who like short walks, rather than long hikes. Here is your excuse to walk around the neighborhood or go to the park for some gentle relaxation but not too much sweat!
Like most malamutes, Juno loves to play. He's very gentle with his mouth. His family plays with him and a kick ball every once in a while and he loves that! He will be a wonderful laid-back family dog. Take a closer look at his pictures to get a really nice idea of how beautiful and happy this boy is!
Juno is has been surrendered by his owners to rescue and is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Logan is currently with his owners in Spokane, WA.

Nema is a beautiful young dog who is a GREAT companion. She has been great at her new foster Mom's home and is so enjoying being allowed to be off a chain and running in a fenced yard. Nema will need a secure yard and would love to have a friend to play with. She is very friendly and does not seem dog aggressive but should be paired with a male dog as a friend. She has not had any accidents in the house and has been left for up to an hour alone in the house without incident, even with an opened yogurt container on the counter! Nema used to live with a cat and has been pretty good with her foster moms kitty.
Nema has been spayed and is ready for a new home before the holidays.
Nema is currently in Poulsbo, WA.

His rescuer says of Sam: He has been a pretty good dog, with all that he has been through. He has been moved from his home that he had been in since birth. There he was chained outside and basically left alone. He was not socialized, but is changing in that area. He does not know any basic commands but he will learn them in time as he learns to trust. He has shown no signs of aggression at all. We have pulled him, put him in crates, kennel, etc. and he has not growled once. He is learning what different treats are. And will take them out of our hands now. He is going to be a wonderful companion for someone who has the time to work with him and show him the world. He has a lot of love to give.
Sam is currently in Yakima, WA but will be moved to the Seattle area soon.

Juniper came to WAMAL from a shelter and was placed into foster care with volunteers and never left. She found her forever home!

Here is a note from his new parents:
Bandit, who we have nicknamed Mookie, has fit in so well after the two-week integration. He is a mamas boy, and partially due to his gentle nature, seems like he has been here and in our hearts forever.
