If you can help Sakari (Inuit for sweet) please let WAMAL know. Addisons will likely limit her life to about 10 years (she will be 4 this spring). Addisons has damaged her adrenal glands so she cannot produce adrenaline in fight or flight situations and cannot regulate her blood salt balance (controlled with steroids and salting her food). As such, she may not survive a serious trauma (being hit by a car) where a non-Addisons dog may. Addisons is an auto-immune disorder and has damaged Sakaris adrenal glands. Salt balance in her blood is the key issue. Untreated, her potassium levels skyrocket and her sodium levels bottom out (a fatal combination). Steroids regulate the potassium, adding salt to her meals 2x daily regulates the sodium. Sakari will need to go to the vet every 4-6 weeks for a blood draw to make sure her salts are within a normal range.
Sakari is house-trained and crate-trained. She has been an inside-outside dog, and learned to stop at the door so her feet could be wiped. Sakari is great with other dogs, loves to play. Sakari is outstanding with kids and extremely gentle. Little kids (infants/toddlers) have whacked her head, pulled her ears, etc. and Sakari wags her tail. Older kids walk her and throw the ball for her and she loves it. She will lay down and curl her paws under her legs so she will not scratch the little kids and let them climb, ride, pull her hair, etc. Sakari just loves the attention. She lives with a cat and will respond to NO when she wants to give chase. Sakari has been through obedience training too.
According to her owners, Sakaris best quality is her strong desire to please. She is a wonderful dog and just really connects to her people.
Sakari is currently living in Leavenworth, WA

Paloni is reported to be GOOD WITH CATS!
Paloni is currently living with her owners in Spanaway, WA.

She is currently unknown with cats, although the previous owner says she was good with them. I was able to hug, grab, yank, and pull on her without a single grumble.
Keynan is currently being fostered in Spokane, WA.

Kenais owners job has expanded to require her to be away a few days at a time, and this is hard on Kenai. She would like to find Kenai a home where there are other people at home or another dog that Kenai could be a companion to.
Kenai is currently living with her owner in Olympia, WA.

Luca is a sweet young girl in need of a family that will help her regain her athletic figure. She is a young girl so would be perfect for a family with an active lifestyle. She would also enjoy taking obedience classes with her new family to keep her intelligent young mind in shape as well! Luca rides wonderfully in the car and is a snuggler with adults. Unknown with other pets and children. She is spayed and all her shots are current.
Luca is being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Teton just came into rescue, more details and better pictures should be coming soon. Here is some info on her from her foster mom:
She was living with a 1 and a 3 year old children, and she has a good temperment. I have not tried her yet with my cats but the shelter staff said they didn't think she would be good with cats because she showed too much interest in them when they walked by the cat room there. She walks on a leash pretty good and loves getting treats, typical mal, but I will have to housetrain her because she was an outside dog at her old house.

Joshua is an loving, easygoing boy. He loves to go for walks, walks great on leash and loves to be petted. More than that, Joshua LOVES to play. He will fetch his squeaky toy over and over. You can grab it out of his mouth - IF you can catch him! He responds to play body language by perking up and galumphing around the yard. He stops, looks around to see if you are chasing him then hops once and runs again! Like many mals, he galumphs more than runs, a very funny boy.
He is such a classic malamute - stubborn when he does not want to go somewhere but can be bribed. Lets you know if he is feeling left out with a beautiful deep woowoo. Talks a lot with an unusual speaking voice. He is quite wary of his foster moms dog pack but is doing well with slow intros to the girls.
At the vet, he ignored the cat on the chair and the pug puppies in the crate and only sniffed slightly at the big lab in the room. Joshua was at the vet because of a skin condition that has obviously been left untreated for some time. Turns out it is a fungus infection and we are treating it. But we are a bit concerned about him being out here in the snow all winter so if you have a nice warm home for him...
We have also put him on a thyroid pill twice a day. These are really cheap and it is actually fun to give them to him in a treat, he takes treat SO gently it is amazing!
We do not want to see him in a home with small children. He has got no training there, and he is really too much of a galumpher. But he may be a candidate for a home with cats, and with some play and attention and inside time he will give you so much joy in return. And he also gives kisses when you ask him to.
At his foster moms Joshua has gained the titles of Best House Dog Ever and Best Dog Bed Thief.
Joshua is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Here is what Kyanna's foster mom has to say about her:
I picture Kyanna standing on a corner, homeless with a sign saying: Will work for praise.
Not much is known about Kyanna. She is a young beautiful female B/W (about 60 lbs) who still has a bit of puppy in her. Well actually a lot of puppy in her. She has not got a mean bone in her body and loves to play with my dominant male GSD. She likes to be around people and will follow you around looking for pets and snuggles.
She is very intelligent and I would go as far as saying that she would be a great agility or obedience dog. She was not house trained when i got her, but it only took 2 days. She walks well on a flexi leash. Her biggest problem is that she gets into things. Everything. It seems that boredom overtakes her during the day and she spends her time trying to figure out how to get into the food pantry, the sink, and everything else that looks like fun. I am thinking that this is just a phase she is going thru because of her age. She likes her pool and will entertain herself for hours.
Here is an update from Kyannas foster family:
She seems to have settled down a bit. The nice thing is that she appears to be good with kids. I have a friend that visits with his 3 young boys - the youngest 4 years. Kyanna actually embraces the chaos of screaming, running, tugging, pushing, pulling, grabbing, while my GSD and I retreat to the Kitchen. It does not appear to phase her one bit. She has such a soft and gentle mouth you can grab anything out of it - that is if you can catch her. She has tried to play with every dog she has met, and has shown no aggression. She is not a large dog but she can get rambunctious when playing and has run into me by accident on occasion. When the dogs start playing I just put my feet up on the couch and turn the volume up on the TV.
Kyanna is fostered in the Spokane Area.

Shadow is housebroken and has had obedience training. He knows heel, down, sit and stay. He also knows come, but he is a Malamute so he will usually come though, unless there are any fur covered distractions. Although Shadow has lived with cats, he always wore a bell, and the cats learned to avoid the bell. He would be best in a home without cats as he definitely displays a normal Mal prey drive toward them. He is proven to be excellent around children both young and old, and used to deliver Candy Canes to the kids at the local elementary school at Christmas time. He is big at 120lbs though, and could easily knock a young child off their feet, so should not be left unattended with them.
Shadow has lived with other dogs; large and small, but occasionally meets one he does not care for. He travels very well in the car, and loves to sleep in his crate at night, but wants to be part of the family and does not like being left alone in a kennel. Shadow does not challenge fences.
A change in family circumstances is forcing his owner to find him a new home.
Shadow is currently being fostered in Seattle, WA.

Is that not the sweetest face? It describes her personality perfectly. Little Ms. chow-hound Shianna has pigeon-toed front feet, knock-kneed splay-footed rear end and she creaks every time she gets up. But she is the sweetest thing in four counties! And her overdeveloped chest and every-which-way legs do not stop her from absolutely loving to go for walks, looking up and asking can we go some more? after the first mile and toddling up to lay her head on your lap at the most inopportune times, but she is pretty creaky and walks longer than a couple of miles are not recommended. Frequent short walks seem like they would be best.
She is a senior and we do not know how long she might grace your home although the vet says she seems to be in pretty darn good shape! But while she does everyone in it will love her - the adults, the children, the other dogs of all shapes and sizes and even the cats. The worlds dumbest cat who has recently wandered INTO one my dog yards, lives right with Shianna.
Shianna is currently being fostered in Cle Elum, WA

Misty is a young girl who was turned over by her former owners because she was having a little trouble getting along with the family Rottweiler. Misty is very friendly and gentle, and has lived mainly indoors. She is fully housetrained and will go to the door and howl when she needs to go out. She can be a little choosy about her doggie friends and has shown to be very aggressive with both males and females, gets along with some but not all, but she does not get along with cats. She is wonderful with people but will most likely need a home without other dogs. She has lived with children ranging in ages from under 6 years up to 13+ years old. Misty likes playing outside, chewing on tennis balls, and sleeping.
Misty is currently being boarded in Maple Valley, WA

Hailey is young and extremely sweet to everyone, not an Alpha type at all. She appears to be one that could do well with little dogs and probably cats, however she has not been tested with cats. She is a HUGE love bug, absolutely LOVES children. She is little, but stocky. You can't help yourself but fall in love with her immediately. She is verbal, especially if she knows you are around and she can't see you. Also gets so excited when your playing with her she talks about it! She knows sit, shake, down (kind of). She walks on a leash pretty well, pulls but not like she is going to take off.
Hailey is fostered in Redmond, WA.

Merlin and his brother Arthur were recently turned over to rescue because their previous family could not give them the time they deserved due to illness in their human family as well as with an older Malamute and work demands. Both are good car travelers and love to play with other dogs. They are sweet dogs that want to be with people and they are ready for training and enjoying all the wonders of the world! Both boys have softer coats so may require a little more brushing and should not be left outside without cover. Both will be up to date on vaccines, wormed and neutered before placement. Arthur and Merlin have been raised together since birth so a joint adoption is possible to the right home. Merlin is currently being fostered in Spanaway, WA.

Kyra is a very sweet female who is a bit gangly and thin right now. She is VERY easy to handle even for a small woman! She loves attention from people, and has done well with other malamutes, male and female, in her transitional foster home.
However! Kyra has got legs to match any runway model and might very well make a really good companion for jogging or other activities that more massive malamutes might not enjoy as much. With her legs she could walk over a low fence but she has not shown any inclination to challenge a relatively low backyard fence - course maybe she just likes it in that yard!
Kyra is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA

Arthur is a great puppy. We currently have him fostered with our two mals. He plays constantly and is happiest with the pack. (I think he might be lonely as an only dog).
He walks well on the leash with little pulling and wants to stop to meet every person/dog he passes. He has been great the two times we have encountered little kids and he did not put his feet up or try to knock them down. Just lots of slobbery puppy kisses.
He loves being brushed and will close his eyes, stretch out his legs to enjoy it. He is mostly house-trained and only seems to pee in the house when he gets really excited.
Arthur rides really well in our truck and sits quietly looking out the windows. At this point his is still afraid to climb in and out on his own and needs to be lifted into the camper.....but once he is in, he is very mellow. He did well with the cat-test and seems mostly un-interetested. He is occassionally curious about her as she walks around, but is easily distracted back to playing with toys or being petted.
He is a good pup whose really eager to please and is learning fast. He is going to make a great pet.
Everyone who has met him so far wishes they could take him home.
Arthur is currently being fostered in Western Washington

Chewy is about 3 to 4 months old. He is doing great in foster care so far and loves playing with other dogs. He was good in a crate for the night. So we do not think it will take much to train him to be indoors. He is is happy and playful, loves to give kisses and does not seem to be scared of much, including big dogs. Goes right up to their kennels. He is going to be a big one, but he is sure cute now. A sweet happy boy.
UPDATE: Chewy is now about 5 months old. He still has many of his baby teeth so he still chews on everything. His chewing is totally playful; he is just a big bouncy, happy boy. He has a personality the same size as his body. Big.
Chewy is already around 70-80 lbs. He is going to be a VERY big boy and may very well be 120-150 lbs when full-grown.
Chewy is probably a mix. He may be a malamute/mastiff mix. He has beautiful mal markings and is a lovely sable color. He does not seem to have much, if any, undercoat.
Chewy needs to go to a home where he will get some good, solid positive-based training and will continue to get lots of attention. He will do well wtih playmates; at his foster home he has many siberian playmates and so his energy is channeled into play and has not become destructive, as puppy energy can if it is not channeled. He is having fun with life and he is a lot of fun himself and we want to keep it that way.
Chewy is fostered in Yakima, WA.

Marissa is starting to settle into her new foster home. Here is what her foster mom has to say about her:
She is a sweet girl, LOTS of energy! She is a very busy dog! She likes to go for walks, does very well on leash, and likes walking right next to Scout (another malamute) rubbing against him the whole time. She might make a good team dog! With the cats Marissa is showing progress, but I still keep them separate from her when she is inside the house. In close quarters, she is a little too agitated for my liking, and may never be cat safe. Outside she will chase them, but does respond to no kitty and comes when you call her back. Marissa loves people, and is good with bigger dogs similar to her size. Marissa does great traveling, in the truck and in the motorhome. When she wants to be petted, she will back up to you and wait for you to rub her hips, that is her favorite! Marissa is a good eater, but still staying fit. We have had a lot of rain here, so the dogs are in need of a bath, and she cleans up great! She is almost too busy for a good brushing, like a little kid she does not want to sit still for that long! :)
Marissa will make someone a great pet, but we would recommend a home without small pets.
Marissa is currently kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Konan is extraordinary. He combines an easygoing personality with a solid athleticism and a silky-soft, terrific coat.
He knows how to tell you what he wants - and he listens to what you want. He has the beginnings of some training and a willingness to learn more. He handles well and is interested in everything and so far seems to like everyone! Gets along well with other dogs and is just a solid, graceful boy. He can jump up into your car with the greatest of ease, GREAT snow coat but is gonna be a great housedog too!

Magic is a very nice, young boy, only a year at the most, maybe less. He likes to play with the other dogs, and does best with female dogs. He still will cop an attitude with some of the boys, but he is learning he does not have to be tough guy like when he lived on the streets. He is quiet in his kennel, likes to jump on top of the dog house and will go check out any dog who comes up to his kennel. He has sweet face and is getting a really pretty coat now. He does not know a lot, but is not hardheaded at all. He should be easy to work with and train and there is a lot to work with in this boy. He still has that lanky teen look about him and he needs to put on more weight. He also loves to play in the water. His current foster had to put one of the big horse tubs in his kennel cause he kept trying to play in his water bucket -- running and jumping in with both front feet and then digging all the water out. Magic will be typical of any young malamute, so an adopter would need to be prepared for destructive puppy tendencies, one would not want to leave this guy home alone, but time and effort will be rewarded with a dog like this.
Magic is currently fostered in Dayton, WA.

Drake is a typical malamute puppy and quite active at this age of 7 months, he can also play rough so an adopter would need to be prepared. No very small kids who are expected to be unsupervised, since he is just a pup and does not know his own strength. Older kids he is good with, as well as, so far, with other dogs.
Drake is housetrained! He knows sit and down, and plays well with others. What a great companion he will make!
Drake is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Pooka just celebrated her first birthday. She is a beautiful, graceful malamute who came into rescue with her mom Alyeska because their owners moved and were unable to take them along.
Pooka is shy but inquisitive when meeting new people. She has never encountered a child. She has lived exclusively outdoors, sharing a kennel run with her protective mom. She is house naive, car naive, toy naive, leash naive... this girl simply has not been exposed to anything! But she is NOT a wildly out of control youngster either! Her mom has done a great job training her to be a sweet girl. Now she needs a forever family to teach her all the other stuff about being a malamute.
Pooka loves to run and play with her mom and with the other young male mals we have introduced her to. Now that she has been introduced to toys a bit, we have noticed that she does not like to share them. She is a bit aggressive about her food when kenneled near other dogs, but is not so in other situations.
Pooka can be adopted with her mom Alyeska, but we do not recommend this. She is at the age where she will start challenging her mom in the nasty ways that female malamutes do. She would be better matched with another young, playful male of her size.
Pooka is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Family is moving into an apartment and do not have room for Nikki (nicknamed Moose!) Their loss could be someone elses very large gain!
Nikkis mom was a pure bred malamute, we think dad was a lab, the best of both seem to be wrapped up in this big ball of fur.
Nikki is in Lake Stevens, WA.

Justus is currently living with his owners in Leavenworth, WA.

This is from Donna, his foster mom:
Shadow is now at my house. He fit in with the pack right away. He is so sweet but he is not skittish or shy with my dogs. He loves to play and run with them. He needs some fattening up. He loves people and he loves other dogs.
Update from Shadows foster-mom:
Shadow is a sweet, gentle boy. He does not seem to be very interested in cats. He loves to have his tummy scratched. Also he loves to have his chest scratched while he is sitting. If you stop he will put a paw on your arm to ask for more. Otherwise, he is never pushy with humans or other dogs. He loves hugs. He has added weight and is just right. At the dog park he runs and plays with all other kinds of dogs. He likes to spend some time inside with the family but likes to go outside at night because he gets too warm in the house. He minds very well. He has the prettiest big round brown eyes and flying nun ears. I think this boy will fit in anywhere he goes.
Shadow is currently located in Vancouver, WA.

Dixie is a tad tubby. But JUST a tad and it does not stop her for a minute! Dixie was raised with several other dogs and 3 family cats. She was one of the first household dogs and can get jealous of the newer canine additions but she was not jealous of those pesky feline critters. They did not bother her a bit.
Dixie has not been around children much and when she is, they make her nervous so we cannot recommend her for a household with children since she is a very big girl.
According to Dixies former mom:
She loves being around the family (my husband and I) and in the house. She will get on the couch if you let her and lay on you like a lap dog. ...Dixie has been through training and loves to please. She is great On a leash and can be trusted off lead. She stays by her home and does not wander off.
She is completely housebroken and is crate trained. We do not leave her in the house alone but do crate her in the house and she does very well. She loves car rides. She will bark if something is wrong or someone is in the yard that she does not know.
Dixie is currently being fostered in Tri Cities, WA

Candy is a sweet young Wakon giant. She has shown herself to be good with the family cats and, so far, family dogs as well. Shes done fine with larger children too but has never been with small children. She is good on leash and is quite shy at this point - not very confident and may need some extra care.
Candy is currently being fostered in Tri Cities, WA

Kids and Kitties. Tina is another Hearth and Home dog - really worth meeting if you are looking for a family dog . Kids love her and she loves them. She was also just fine with the cats at a shelter where she stayed for awhile.
Tina is a very sweet malamute with big sad eyes but not a sad bone in her body. She loves to play with the boys in the yard but as soon as you so much as hint that you might pet her she comes over and does the cutest belly flop around. And looks up at you with those big brown eyes and a big smile on her face!
Her coat is a lush, rich sable, short enough to be easy to care for but definitely thick enough for snow play. Tina almost glows in the sunlight. A bit smaller than the norm, her size does not inhibit her a bit. She herds her foster mates around the yard when she wants to play, jumps up on the dog house when she wants to see what is going on in the valley and woo woos with the best of them.
Tina is currently being kenneled in Cle Elum, WA

Bear is a fantabulous family dog just shaking his head about having to wait once again for his family to find him! He is back in rescue through NO fault of his own having spent the last 2 years with a family, other dogs in and out, children of all ages. He has lived happily with pit bulls and rottweilers and other malamutes and toddlers and older kids....And he LOVES having his own home. This is a Hearth N Home kind of guy. Even after a walk, and he loves walking as much as any self-respecting malamute, Bear knows exactly where home is. His foster mom says: Every time I look at this guy, I get a big huge grin on my face. That is just what he brings out in people. And I want to go hug him, which of course suits him just fine! But we do know that Bear can not live with cats. NO cats. Bear is totally convinced that cats are toys. He thinks it is just part of having a good time, which is what he is all about. Bear is just plain HappyGoLucky, except when he is stuck in kennel. Then he cries. But when he gets to come back out in the yard, and he looks at you once again with this big grin on his face, you cannot help but be happy and grin back. And it will make your day.
Bear is being fostered in Cle Elum, WA

Mack is a loving senior boy who is looking for a retirement home to finish out his days. Mack loves to be outside and prefers his bed in the dirt. He loves to go for walks, walks great on leash around the cul-de-sac . He will put his head gently on your arm or lap and enjoys being petted. When his foster mom comes home from work he greets her with his beautiful deep WOO. They howl to each other until he is petted. When the other dogs are at play, he will run up and do his WOO at them to try and get their attention or play referee.
When Mack was at the vet to be neutered they found cancer. The Doc believes he got it all. Mack would take his medicine and other treats very gently. It is amazing how much he has brightened up after his recovery.
Mack prefers to be outside, but he will come in the basement for a little while to get his loves and treats. Macks hair color is off white and so soft. He does enjoy his baths, the easiest dog his foster mom has ever had to give a bath.
We are not sure how Mack would be with small children, he is so BIG. He has been around his foster moms grandson and seems to ignore him. There are no cats in his foster moms area, but he does ignore the squirrels in the trees next to the kennel/play area.
Mack is currently being fostered in Olympia, WA.

Nanuk spent the first years of his life on a heavy chain with a padlock on his neck. He was often left alone for weeks at a time with nothing but a bucket of water and a box of food. I am amazed by Nanuks resilience. Nanuk is a gentle spirited dog who loves people and other dogs. He very much wants to be part of a family. His greatest joy is being in the company of others. He is very eager to please and is easy to train. He does have a prey drive and should not be off leash around cats or in areas where there may be porcupines! With the exception of the porcupine issue, he is wonderful off leash, checks on his people regularly and comes when called most of the time. He never once completely disappeared on me. He is very strong and sometimes does not know his strength.
Nanuk had never been inside before, now he loves it. He settles down quickly, occassionally rising to ask for a scratch behind the ears. This dog has been through a lot and deserves only the best as he moves into his later years. He will need a place inside your house and a yard. Like any dog, he should meet any dogs he plans on living with first. He gets along beautifully with my dog and has met some of her friends and has done fine.
Still, he has only been off his chain for a month, and continued socialization will be important for him.
Nanuk is being cared for in Eastern Washington. If you are interested in meeting Nanuk, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Rest In Peace girl!
Sadie is a senior whose family lost her but never found her. She deserves a home for the few years she has left.
She has clearly been someones house pet, is good in the house, great with kids and is distinctly UNhappy if left out of the family goings on.
She is good with other dogs as well. In short she is a great dog.
Sadie is being cared for in Maple Valley, WA. If you are interested in meeting Sadie, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

He seems fine with other big malamutes. Mookie seems to get on fine with older children. He is not aggressive, he just does not have a clue how big he is and easily can knock little ones over, plus often he would like their toys! He would love to chase our cats if he got the opportunity, so best if no cats were in his home unless he could not get to them. I absolutely LOVE this dog and, he deserves a great life with a loving home especially since the beginning of his life was quite grim! He came into rescue quite untrusting, probably for good reason and now understands that people are really there to love him and oh has he ever blossomed!
Mookie recently sent us an email from his foster home:
My name is Mookie. I am also known as The Mookster, The Cookie Monster, The Sloppy Kisser, The Leaning Mastodon, and Loverboy. I am living with a couple of other dogs. There is a sweet Little Diva who struts her stuff for me but I am giving her the patented Mookster aloof treatment so she tries harder. Then there is a very strange looking guy that I get a kick out of. He and I get like to play along the fence. I do not know what is wrong with him but he is soo ugly, short hair, back and tan, and the biggest ears I have ever seen. We go for walks together and I can not help but look at him and wonder if he has got way too many cousins in his bloodline. ;) He says he is German whatever that means. :) Must not be any snow where he is from. Hardly any hair, and with those ears, geez, he could collect enough snow to freeze his brain solid.
I am learning a lot here and I am having fun doing it. I have finally figured out that I am not supposed to pee in the peoples den. How was I supposed to know that ALL that space was a den for a couple of people?? I really like being in the people den with them. There is cookies and toys and watching Animal Planet, snuggling on the floor, sneaking up on that long soft couch thing and laying my head on a persons lap and getting hugs and giving kisses (when I am doing this my name is Sweetie). My people tell me what a good, gentle love I am in the house. Sometimes they ask me to do something new. It is a little confusing but they take it slow and there is an extra special treat when I am learning something for the first time. Mom called it incentive pay. I come when mom or dad whistles sometimes but if they say softly, Cookie for the Mookie?, I am there. Not so many cookies for that now, a head rub is enough. Mom also says that she knows what a great guy I am but a little polishing of a gem makes it more attractive to others. Here she goes with another word I do not know, gee whiz.
Mookie is presently being fostered in Albany, OR

Silver is an athlete waiting for his chance at the Gold. I think Bambi was his daddy. He is truly that graceful and amazing to watch, although he can also be a normal rambunctious young Malamute. Silver wants so much to please people that he will watch for hours to see if there is something he can do to make you come over to pet him and play with him.
He has had some training, but it is just too much for him when he gets excited - which is pretty often. When told to sit for his dinner, he almost always lays down. This guy will make you laugh every day.
Silver seems as if he could bound out of his 6 foot kennel because he is SO happy to see you! But he also bounds around the yard every day and never challenges the 4 foot fence. Silver lives up to his reputation of being very good. He plays well with females and he has also done well with the 3 malamute males we have introduced him to.
And he has the most beautiful and expressive eyes! You know every thought that flashes through his mind. His perfect, silvery coat, long legs and big feet will be great for snow or sun activities. He LOVES people, is excited about every new thing that happens to him and is just waiting for an active loving family to bring him home!
Silver is being cared for in Cle Elum, WA. If you are interested in meeting Silver, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Zeus is a young, happy boy with tons of energy. He is super sweet, very strong, athletic, and full of life. His enthusiasm for everything is infectious and his favorite thing to do is run and get the ball and then he brings it back to you, most of the time! He knows how to sit, will come when called, and will watch you with his ears pricked forward, waiting for his treat. He is good with older children. He needs a home ready for a big puppy, who knows the mal temperament. Zeus is great with other dogs. So far, both female and male as well (altho we have only put him with the good boys) He would be fabulous at agility or most anything involving activity. Zeus definitely needs playmates. If you have a female driving you crazy, you need a Zeus-fixer! This dog has a bigger than life personality, who would love to be your best friend.
Zeus is being cared for in Cle Elum, WA. If you are interested in meeting Zeus, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Sugar is the daughter of Jezzie (an accidental breeding). She is a very sweet, happy friendly fluff ball (but a BIG one) She is very good with children and other dogs (has not been around small dogs) Cats are not recommended (she and her mom used to go after the family cat). Being a puppy, she has the usual puppy temperament and need to chew and eat anything she sees, dig a hole anywhere she feels is lacking one, and lick any available face. She is an unconditional lover!

An update from Lobos foster mom:
Lobo (wolf in spanish) is very friendly and outgoing with people and seems to think it is his duty to greet everyone he meets with a hug and kiss on the face. Most adults find this quite entertaining the first time it happens (except for the muddy paw prints on the shoulders) but kids do not. Lobo is a bit too rambunctious in this regard for smaller children. The only thing I have found to keep him from leaping into my arms for a hug is to kneel down and hug him first. He is a very snuggley, affectionate boy who loves attention.
Lobo also loves to be on top of things. When he is not running laps around the yard with is foster sister Paloma, he can be found chillin on top of his dog house. At a park, his favorite place is on top of the picnic table. If there is food up there, that is a bonus, but he really just wants the view.
This boy loves car rides but prefers to be in the front seat, so a divider or crate is a good idea. He also loves to hike. He does not pull as strongly uphill as I would like(!) but he does not yard you back down the mountain either. He likes to smell the roses along the way, and pee on each one, too.
Lobo is a bit picky about his doggy friends. He does best with girl dogs of his size, and is not good with smaller dogs or cats. He is young and loves to run and play, so should be matched with a dog of similar age and energy level.
Lobo is being cared for in Shoreline (North Seattle), WA. If you are interested in meeting Lobo, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Sabella is absolutely gorgeous and had a personality to match her looks! She loves people, seems perfectly comfortable in a house or outside, gets along well with other dogs, and was a little angel when being bathed and groomed. She is calm and easygoing but gets excited about the usual malamute goodies - walks, treats and pets!
We do not know much about her background as she was found as a stray but she seems to be quite comfortable with a family, in a house, on a leash. She may even know some commands! We will tell you more as we learn more about this beautiful girl.
Sabella is being cared for in Maple Valley, WA. If you are interested in meeting Sabella, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Rocky is being cared for in Yakima, WA. If you are interested in meeting Rocky, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!.

Like any typical malamute, she is smart and independent and will roam if off lead. She is very loving to her people, relaxed, and happy to be included in the pack She is even good home alone (as long as she is not locked away in a room).
She takes a little while to warm up to you if you are new to her, but she does, and then she is happy and calm. She has a longer coat which requires grooming, something she is not too thrilled with. She likes to play with other dogs, is good with older children. Unknown with cats.
Dakota is with her owner in Bellevue, WA.

Maggie is an almost-senior but at 8 has a lot of good years left. She could use some exercise to lose a little weight, but she is a very friendly girl who was found as a stray. We are still learning more about her. She appears to pretty much ignore cats and also thinks she should be a house pet (we agree). She was pretty neglected when we got her, and has had some much needed medical attention. She has perked up considerably now that she is feeling better, as you can see in her smile. Everyone who has met her loves her. She deserves a home she can count on for the rest of her life.
Maggie is being cared for in Goldendale, WA. If you are interested in meeting Maggie, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Kiros has had one loving owner all his life and he is a happy and well adjusted dog. He gets along well with other dogs. He is too big for small children but is friendly to all. If he doesn't know you, he feels sure he should. He even is OK with cats if they are smart enough not to run.
Kiros has been through Obedience training. He knows sit, down, shake (will give you either the right or left depending on which hand you extend), stay (to some extent), speak (howl on command, great entertainment for others to meet him), quiet (when not to speak), off (as in..off the bed, couch, chair, anywhere you want him to move), kennel (get into the car, boat, room, etc), and heel (circle around and sit on owners left side). all of these commands he knows either verbally or in conjunction with hand signals. depending on his mood and attention, he will do most commands with only hand signals. He is generally well trained and wants to please...especially if you have treats. he is your best friend then.
Kiros is being cared for in Seattle, WA. If you are interested in meeting Kiros, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

An update from Palomas foster mom:
I am not sure where Paloma got her name (it means dove in spanish) because it does not fit her personality. I still call her that half the time, but the rest of the time I call her Squiggles. This is one sqiggley-wiggley girl! She is young, strong, and exuberantly interested in everything.
Palomas main mission in life is to keep the yard free of fish, possums, mice, moles, birds, and squirrels. (My job is to restock the pond and restack the woodpile!) When she is not patroling the trees or fishing in the pond, she is usually running 28 mph laps around the yard with her foster brother Lobo (who retreats to the top of the dog house when he is too pooped to run any more). This is one energetic girl!
Cats fall into Palomas category of pesky critters. If she spots one while out for a walk and you are holding her leash the wrong way, she will likely pop your fingers right off going after it. She would really prefer a home without a pesky cat...or she will spend her whole life trying to get rid of it for you.
Paloma has the typical female malamute temperament of being choosy about her doggie friends so she will need to meet any potential friend before adoption. She does best with northern breed males who will let her be the boss. She loves to hike and in this setting I have noticed she is a bit bossy or snappy with smaller children. Older children are fine.
Over all she is a wonderful malamute who would love a forever home that understands the female malamute temperament and can keep her busy running or hiking.
Paloma is being cared for in Shoreline (North Seattle), WA. If you are interested in meeting Paloma, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Luka is a very playful young dog. She appears to be a malamute yearling, perhaps even a tad younger. You should see her play hide and seek with one of our volunteers. She peers around the big tree and always - always - manages to be exactly on the other side, laughing and laughing!
Luka is the age where she is quite full of herself. She wants the other dogs to know that she is a princess and is to be treated as such. Her coat certainly looks and feels worthy of royalty; it is hard to stop petting her. But like all youngsters, she really could use some obedience training.
Luka is being cared for in Maple Valley, WA. If you are interested in meeting Luka, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Nikki is one magnificent girl. She is very low maintenance, so much so it is hard to believe she is so young. She is a very active dog and must have been someone’s house pet. She appears to be housetrained, takes treats gently, has impeccable house manners and rides wonderfully in a car.
Nikki really likes people. She greets everyone with a tail wag and a slurp. She walks well on lead and would make a great walking or hiking partner. Nikki is unknown with cats but has shown considerable interest in squirrels and other furry critters.
Nikki is being cared for in the Maple Valley Area. If you would like to meet Nikki, please submit an application and we will schedule your home visit as soon as possible.

Denali is a tall, gorgeous boy who is a shy until he gets to know you. He seems to be less shy with men and has improved a lot since being in rescue and interacting with our volunteers. As soon as he comes out of his shell the goofy part of his personality starts to come out. He has a ton of energy and likes to play rough with his human friends as well as furry friends. So far, he has played well with the other malamutes that he has come into contact with. However, he would not be a candidate for a home with small children as he does not realize how big and strong he is.
Denali enjoys going on walks, but will pull like any self respecting malamute! He is very smart but has normal malamute selective hearing and is interested in any moving critter. He would love to chase if given a chance. He knows how to sit on command and will sometimes give you five. Denali has a wonderful woo woo, especially if he is bored or not getting what he wants, then he will let you hear it.
Denali is looking for that special someone who has the patience and time to care for and love him while he learns that people can be trusted and the world can be a big happy place to explore. With some love and training he will be a great companion for someone that wants a buddy to do outdoor activities with.
Denali is currently being cared for in the Maple Valley area. If you would like to meet Denali, please submit an application and we will schedule your home visit as soon as possible.

Zeke is currently being cared for by his owners on Bainbridge Island.

This is being posted by the lady who originally rescued me. She wants to make sure I have a good family to go to again. My current family is going to take me to the Humane Society in Tacoma if I can't find a home soon.

Special thanks to Ron and Deb and the staff at South Bay Veterinary for everything they did to literally get him on his feet. WAMAL thanks you, Henry and his new Mom Robin thanks you!
WAMAL would also like to thank everyone that contributed their time and money to make his care possible. We will continue to post about his progress.

Are You My Mommy and Daddy? Help, I am Lost!
A good samaritan - Pamela petpals2006@yahoo.com - found this boy in Spokane. He appears to be all malamute but they can not keep him as he has shown a strong urge to eat their cat. This boys owners or a foster home needs to be found for him ASAP!
He is about 55 - 65 lbs ( Big Boy ) all white with light cinimon color marks down his back to the top of head where the markings come to a point at his nose. he has beautiful striking golden brown eyes. he is about 1 to 2 yrs old pretty young and well taken care of. very pleasent disposition but has a thing for cats drives him crazy. very strong minded he will try to get his own way and tries to get you to do what he wants you to do. will do anything for a hotdog. he loves to go for walks and rides in the car.

Here is the recent update on Nema (now Nuala) from her current owners:
Nuala is now housebroken, current on all shots, loves to be groomed and have her nails done, goes to Doggie Daycare twice a week and loves it. She is still quite strong on walks, but settles into a quick human pace after about 3/4 of a mile (great for jogging however). She has learned a little bit about being around horses, and is okay now to be tied up at the barn with my other dog, while I ride (this was an issue at first, and we graduated to it slowly). She is also not afraid of fireworks - since i live on a reservation where fireworks are a month long affair - this has been great.
She deserves to have a wonderful family, who want a dog that likes activity. She enjoys our three walks a week, and as I said, daycare 2xs a week. My finanaces are no longer able to keep this up - and I HATE having her in the garage during the days, although she seems to like to be in there with my cat. she does have two beds, toys, chewies and it's carpeted so it's not dungeon like.
Nema is a beautiful young dog who is a GREAT companion. She has been great at her new foster Mom's home and is so enjoying being allowed to be off a chain and running in a fenced yard. Nema will need a secure yard and would love to have a friend to play with. She is very friendly and does not seem dog aggressive but should be paired with a male dog as a friend. She has not had any accidents in the house and has been left for up to an hour alone in the house without incident, even with an opened yogurt container on the counter! Nema used to live with a cat and has been pretty good with her foster moms kitty.
Nema has been spayed and is ready for a new home before the holidays.
Nema is currently living with her owner in Suquamish, in Kitsap County, just off of Bainbridge Island, and just before Poulsbo, WA.

Nanook was turned into the local shelter as her family could no longer keep her due to circumstances beyond her control. Shelter staff staff describe her as a friendly, nice girl! She likes to go for walks and doesn't pull too bad. She hasn't shown a lot of interest in other dogs. More information to come once we have an opportunity to get to know Nanook better. Her vaccines have been updated and she is being spayed in preparation for her new forever home. Nanook is AKC registered and has her registration certificate.
Here is an update for Nanooks foster home:
Nanook is settled in now. She has been great! She is very affectionate and really loves being around people. If we are sitting around she lays around us if we are up doing something she is right at our side.
Here are some observations:
Pulling - She pulls a little at the beginning of a walk when she is excited to go but settles down after a while and pulls a little but not bad.
Children - She is very good with our 10 year old daughter and loves to follow her around, but has not been around anyone younger as of yet.
Cats - After our cat realized that Nanook was friendly they have gotten along wonderfully! Nanook likes to chase her around but not to harm her just to play. Nanook also tries to groom her.
Dogs - She has only had a brief encounter with the neighbors 15 year old very mellow dog (it is a Northern breed but not sure what kind.) Nanook was on a leash and the other dog was not, they went nose to nose and Nanook proceeded to lick the other dogs face and ears.
Playing - She loves to chase us around the backyard and gently bump into us. She is very playful and has plenty of energy. She will put her mouth around your arm or leg but not bite down at all.
Commands - She understands NO and LEAVE IT and will stop or drop whatever. Unfortunately she looks as though she was abused. She closes her eyes and her ears go back when she hears those words. She is now hearing a lot of GOOD GIRL from us to hopefully help her to know she is not in trouble and that we are not going to hurt her.
Nanook is currently being cared for in the Kirkland area. If you would like meet Nanook, please submit an application and we will get your home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

Dewey was supposed to be a really scared - and maybe scary! - dog. But we forgot to tell him. Deweys owners became disabled and could not take him with them to their new home. It took him all of a day and a half to adjust to a completely new home and lifestyle and start on his mission in life. Which is to have fun.
Dewey is playful and a bit smaller than most. He has a full-size malamute appetite though and a golden sable easy-care coat, alternately gorgeous and goofy face, and almond-shaped gold eyes. He is very agile and can wiggle through any opening larger than chainlink. Just when you think Oh No, he is stuck, Bingo! he is out with the other dogs. And he gets along with all of them, if they will let him
Altho he could easily go over his foster home's short (but hotwired) fence he has not challenged it. He is smart and friendly and a naturally happy boy and easy to handle.
Here is a bit of information from his former owners: No practical experience with cats, but when he got loose he tended to chase animals smaller than him but never caught them. Not that he was not fast ...just that he was not really trying. He has had experience with our grandchildren (ages 3-4) but does not know his strength so when he gets up to lick them or play, he scares them. He loves to play and eat. He has been in the house and is rambunctious for a day but gets along after that. He will want to go outside to pee and will go to the door.
Altho he could easily go over his foster homes short (but hotwired) fence he has not challenged it. And in the vets office, he ignored the resident cats so MAY be trainable in a home with cats and very cautious owners. He is smart and friendly, once he is comfortable, and a naturally happy boy and easy to handle.
Dewey is currently being card for in Cle Elum, WA. If you would like to meet Dewey, please submit an application and we will get a home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

Ms. Elsie is the epitome of a laid back girl. She is a wonderful, sweet loving girl who is looking for a family she can adopt! She appears to like children so it looks like she came from a home where children were present.
She is not a demanding dog and does not appear to need the amount of exercise that a lot of the dogs do - although she could stand to lose a few pounds! A walk with Elsie is more of a leisurely stroll than a pulling contest. Not that she is not an active dog, its just that she is more restrained and dignified than your typical malamute. She is very content just laying in the grass with her head on your lap.
Once more is known about Elsie her bio will be updated.
Elsie is currently being cared for in the Maple Valley area. If you would like meet Elsie, please submit an application and we will get your home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

Jezzie came from a loving home, but her owners feared for her safety since she was always getting out of the yard and the neighbors were being threatening to her. She is a bit shy but is wonderful with the children she lived with. (the children were always supervised and taught the proper treatment of dogs, however) She was very good with the dogs in her household, but she is unknown with strange dogs and should not be ina house with cats. When determined she is an escape artist, so a kennel run for when she is unsupervised would be recommended as well as a home that would not leave her alone long. She does not run away when she gets out, but this is not a safe situation and is why she is now with us, so a new home will need to be prepared. Jezzie is gorgeous, walks well on a leash and is housetrained. She will be a great pet for the right home.
Jezzie is being cared for in Maple Valley, WA. If you are interested in meeting Jezzie, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Tikanni appears to have had some obedience training as well and responds quickly to come, sit, down, and stay. He is a beautiful Mal with a gorgeous ruff on his neck and a large powerful chest. He is between 1 and 2 years old and weighs about 85 pounds.

Kenai is a lovely girl who needs to find a new home that does not have small children. She does well around older children, but the small children can be a bit too much for her. Kenai currently lives with two cats that she enjoys chasing and playing with. Her favorite buddy is the Llasa Apsa that lives next door - she seems to prefer the little dogs to the big dogs!
Kenai has had basic and advanced obedience training so knows most basic commands. She is a loving family oriented girl just looking to have fun - she enjoys playing in a kiddie wading pool, playing fetch with a ball, going for walks or just snuggling. Kenai is spayed and her shots are current. Kenai is also AKC registered and her registration certificate and pedigree are available.

Summer is one of the most non-confrontational dogs around. She was introduced almost immediately (by accident) to a full pack of 7 dogs and did great with all of them. She is very hesitant but not skittish - she just asks if everything is ok before she does it. She loves to go for walks and has a beautiful gait. She is doing very well in the house and learns quickly. She has apparently never been on slick floors before and gingerly walks from throw rug to throw rug. She does not challenge fences, does not go after the worlds dumbest cat.
She has the softest fur of all the dogs here. And the bounciest gait! She seems to be most comfortable being outdoors and she gets so excited and happy when people join her outside!! But she is pretty sad when no one is with her so we are expanding her horizons by bringing her inside every day with the other dogs.
Summer was found in a National Park, deep in the woods, tied to a tree. Either left to die or maybe waiting for someone to come back and shoot her. She has several contusions but good bloodwork except for a low thyroid. She loves taking her thyroid pills since they come in a treat! Late in life, she is learning that love can come her way.
Summer is being cared for in Cle Elum, WA. If you are interested in meeting Summer, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!
From Summers Foster Mom: Many thanks to those of you who contributed so generously to assist with pain medications for a comfortable summer for Summer. Her body may be failing but her outlook on life grows younger every day. Summer did not expect kindness, pets or play when she came. She does now! Because of her arthritis and other little quirks, Summer is not a dog who will ever be a normal companion dog. She is not quite housebroken, does not trust wood or pergo floors and becomes distressed when indoors too long. She can go down stairs but not up them and won't even come onto a flat wooden deck. And, most of all, another upheaval in her life at this late date could really hurt that wonderful outlook that is just now emerging. So she can stick around at Sandy's Doggie Playyard.

She loves belly rubs and scratches on her back where it is hard for her to get to. She knows the basic commands, walks on a leash and loves her treats. Also loves to be brushed!
She will come in the house, but wants to be outside as she gets too warm., she has a really thick, healthy coat on her and you will usually see her sleeping out in the yard in the cool grass. She has some arthritis in her back legs and prefers not to go up a lot of steps.
She currently lives with a 12 lb female Shih tzu named Bailey and a 40 lb Pit Bull named Bean and a Pit Mix named Opal. She can be found most days scolding the youngsters and playing referee and acting Motherly if need be. Other times she just ignores them and lets them settle they're own battles.
She also shares her space with 5 goats..whom she was very interested in at first, but now pretty much ignores...
She will howl at the moon most nights...for a minute or two and then settle in. She does not dig holes or chew up things, unlike the other two.
Luna is a great big mellow dog, that just wants to be loved and cared for and will in return, provide someone with constant, loving companionship.
If you have an interest in adopting Luna she is currently in Vancouver, WA at the Humane Society for Southwest Washington. It's possible Luna will be moving to foster care with the shelter, but it should be still easy to arrange to meet with her by contacting Laura Koczaja - wokoczaja@yahoo.com

8/30/06 - Update: Chief has been pulled from the shelter, and we have a VERY temporary place for him to stay in Kent, WA, as we could just not see him end up being euthanized, but we need to find him someplace to go, and soon. If you can foster chief please either email us or send in a fosterhome application. Thank-you!
Chiefs markings are stunning, his fur is shiny and thicker than it looks in the pictures and he has a big blocky head - a bit too big for his slightly underweight body. He may have a touch of sharpei or mastiff. His coat is a short summer coat and this winter he will no doubt turn into a fabulous snowdog.
He walks well on leash, he is a good size if you like big dogs and could be a great companion. If you can provide a forever home - or even a temporary home for Chief, please contact us.

Cody walks well on leash, as you can see from her pictures she is quite a family dog. She does fine with other dogs on walks and greets everyone she meets but she does expect some elbow room from those other pesky dogs. Cody likes walks and hugs and going for rides. She is housebroken and has basic obedience training, spayed, microchipped and current on vaccinations.
Cody is with her family in Pullman, WA

Makalu is very nice and playful with older children and is very friendly and out going with adults he does not know. He is smart, very loving and wants to be the center of attention - what Malamute does not! He even has a sensitive side to him: when someone is feeling sad or hurt he will place a paw or head on your lap to give comfort. He enjoys playing and expresses it very vocally - he will tell you exactly what he thinks about things! Makalu especially enjoys playing fetch, going for walks and sleeping at the foot of his owners bed every night.
Makalu has basic obedience training and knows sit, lay down, go out, shake and heel - he walks very well on leash in a halti. He is neutered. The perfect home for him would be one where he can continue to be part of an active loving family and one that does not have any other pets or small children.
Makalu is currently with his owners in Lake Stevens, WA.

Baby Bear is now very confused and alone. He is a bit afraid of other dogs since he has only known his bossy sister. He seem fine with cats but has also had no experience with children. Baby Bear may have problems with close-up vision; he will WOO WOO WOO at you until you touch him.
Or he may just have figured out how to train his caretakers to give him pets - He loves neck scratches! He is super SUPER sweet and needs a forever home that will let him live the rest of his life knowing that he will never see the inside of a shelter again.
It is too too sad to see these older sweethearts in this situation.
Baby Bear is in the shelter in Hayden, Idaho.

URGENT - We think Delilah is the mother of Natatchee. They are very attached to each other and should probably be fostered separately if possible to make them more adoptable. None of these dogs are aggressive, just shy. They have had little socialization and are in a precarious situation. She is being cared for by a rescue group nearby to make sure the dogs have food and water and is among a large group of dogs that this group is trying to save on a collectors property. They need foster care urgently. If you can help we will put you in touch with her current caretakers.
Delilah is being cared for in Toledo, WA. If you are interested in meeting Delilah, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Zodi is the perfect example of big things come in little packages! This little girl packs a full size Mal attitude in a petite little body. She has the sweetest and most loving dispostion. She just lights up when she sees kids, especially little girls. She grew up with other dogs, but can be picky about doggy friends just like any Mal. She is currently living with her new buddy Jack.
Zodi is well trained, knows sit, down, and shake with both feet. She has excellent house manners and loves to cuddle, especially if it involves a belly rub! Zodi will be an excellent addition to an active family, but needs one without small critters.
If you have room in your heart for this sweet girl, please submit an application and we will get your home visit schedule ASAP. Zodi is currently being cared for in the North Seattle area.

Kadin was found as a stray so we don't know much about him other than he is super friendly and a bit of an escape artist (jumped a pretty high fence). He is relatively good on leash and appears to possibly be housetrained. He plays well with other dogs. Unknown with cats. We will update this info as we get more.
Kadin is being cared for in Spanaway, WA. If you are interested in meeting Kadin, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!
Here is an update from Kadins foster home:
I would just like to let you know that Kadin is adorable. He is VERY sweet and affectionate. He loves to be around people and would follow you everywhere. When in the car he likes to sit next to me and put his head on my shoulder. He is pretty good with his manners considering he is only eight months old. He still jumps on you occasionally and can be mouthy/nippy. He did some digging, chewing on the new gate and on my maple tree. He is very eager to learn and wants to please. I still must be very careful with Kadin around the kids . He can be very rough while playing but will listen to us when is told to stop. I would definitely not recommend him to go to a home with kids any younger than 8 or 10. He does not cry anymore when left in his dog run and has learned to go to his dog house when it is raining.

Zulu is an energetic young boy, loves to check things out. Sometimes runs, sometimes walks and often bounces when he just knows those pesky field mice are teasing him. His volunteer pal laughed so hard he almost cried. He does listen to commands and someone with experience in training would do wonders with him. He either sits or lays down with the command of lay down or sit, sometimes vice verse (sometimes he gets them confused). He knows what NO means and even COME HERE and he really understands GO BOY! which often results in me trying to run as fast as I can with him (sometimes I win, sometimes I do not). He also understand when I tap on the water bowl that I want him to drink.
He has a great heart, once he knows you, he looks forward to seeing you and going out as befitting these sociable mals. He is good at going back inside without any fuss and going into the kennel.
He is a huge fan of treats and shows absolutely no food aggression with people- I take bits of his milkbone away and he does not seem to care at all, just looks at me like, Come on, I was eating them. He shows no aggression against the birds in the field and did not seem to care about cats at this point. He is a really good boy with spectacular looks.

Bo is as amazingly well behaved as he is strikingly good looking. This young adult male is currently fostered with several German Shepherds that is getting along with marvelously. His foster mom reports that he is getting along with all dogs large and small, and has shown no aggression over food or toys. He has not been tested with the kitty, and is unknown with small critters. He walks extremely well on lead, very minimal pulling. He is housebroken and crate trained, though he definitely prefers to sleep outside of his crate. Bo would make an excellent addition to an active family!
Bo knows sit, down, roll over and knows how to give hugs... He will sit and then when you pat your chest and ask for a hug, he will nicely jump up and put his paws on your chest. Bo is also crate trained and prefers to spend the day and night indoors. He sleeps on the bed and loves to snuggle..He has impeccable house manners. He also knows shake with both paws, depending on which hand you put out. He loves to lean into people and cuddle with people.
Bo is being cared for in Mukilteo, WA. If you are interested in meeting Bo, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!.

However, patience and mutual respect are the byword with Ranger. We are still exploring boundaries and teaching Ranger that we get to set the boundaries. And that it is safe for him to let us do that. Rangers home will be a quiet low key home with only a few people.
Ranger was previously known as FOUND, as he was found dehydrated in the woods. He is being cared for in Cle Elum, WA.

Isis is a loving dog who loves being with family. She will even let you dress her up! She is said to be good with the child and cat she lives with. She is very responsive to people and to correction so a soft voiced adopter would be best. She needs a home where she will part of the family and be able to be indoors as well as outdoors. She loves to go for walks, hikes and even to the beach where she can get her feet wet! She loves attention and loves to give attention sometimes too much! Isis is sweet and gentle and would be someones best friend. Isis would be best as an only dog.
Isis is currently with her owners in Marysville, WA

Jack is very friendly and outgoing with people. He is young, strong and exuberantly interested in everything. He will require an owner who has experience with malamutes big dogs and who will be able to handle his further training. He knows basic commands - sit, down and will come when called. His foster parents write:
We are still working on his jumping up and his pulling when on a leash which he is getting better at. Due to his size and energy, he needs to be watched with small children. Although he is good around my grandson who is 8 Months old, he would be better with older kids. Jack loves attention and follows me around the house. He is content to lie at my feet - great foot warmer. Jack appears to have the typical malamute temperament of being choosy about his doggy friends. So he would need to meet any potential friends before adoption. After introductions with my 2 dogs, female setter/spaniel - 5 years - and male Husky/Lab - 2 years. Jack has done great and they all 3 play well together. All 3 dogs eat in the kitchen and there is no aggression with whose dish is whose. I do not have any cats so I am not sure how he would react. He does sit at the window and just watch the neighbor cat.
Jack is being cared for in North Seattle, WA. If you are interested in meeting Jack, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!

Once her knee is repaired and rehabbed, she will live a long and pretty normal life but she should go to a quieter, less active home so that she will not feel left out when she cannot participate in bike rides or long runs. She is quite young so if you want a long-term companion but you are not highly active yourself, you should meet Dixie. Dixie was raised with cats other dogs. She adores women and is a bit reserved with some men and with children. Looking for a loving companion for easy strolls and quiet evenings by the fireplace? Look no further!

Update: Samson is a great dog, he listens well and comes when called. Sleeps with our new kitten, the cat seeks him out to play and to sleep at night. Duke does not seem to mind the extra company either.
Samson is very well behaved, especially when he understands the routine. He is definitely a creature of habit and has learned all of the boundaries very well. He stills controls the feed bowls, if I feed them together, which I still do when I am in a hurry. He simply picks up both bowls and moves them to a corner then he eats and after he is done Duke eats. Seems to be working fine, I have even had to cut back on what I was feeding them as Duke started gaining weight.
They play together very well and Samson just adores attention when you are outside. He will come running back every few minutes to get a few kind words and a scratch behind the ears. We are becoming very attached to the big guy, he is a wonderful dog.
Samson is a tall guy and as sweet as they come. He can climb or leap most fences which is probably how he ended up a stray and in the pound. An adopter will need a 6 foot fence, and probably also a kennel run with a lid for when the dog is home alone.
Samson loves everything and everybody. He just loves to be hugged and cuddled and when you lay in the grass with him he lays right on top of you. He is learning to play fetch and tug of war. He seems to have been a back yard dog that never got much attention. There are a lot of things that are very new to him like the lawn mower, garden hose and tile floors. He takes treats very gently.
Samson is also learning to listen extremely well. He will sit, shake and stay. He leaves the house when told and he will lay down if you tell him. He gets along with the cat at his foster home, and they have even been caught sleeping in the straw together. He may do best with a play mate to keep him company as he is full of energy, and loves to play all the time.
Samson is truly an awesome dog who will love anyone who welcomes him into their family. He is looking for that just-right forever home.
Sampson is currently being cared for in the Spokane area. If you would like meet Sampson, please submit an application and we will get your home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

Alyeska is a young malamute who came into rescue with her daughter Pooka because their owners moved and were not able to take them along.
Aly is timid initially until she get to know you, greeting you with her ears down and her teeth clicking in a submissive way. She is quick to recognize a familiar friendly face, however, and will belly up for a tummy rub. She has had no exposure to young children, but does seem quite gently and loving.
This girl has lived exclusively outdoors, spending a good deal of time in a kennel run with her daughter. She is house naive and it might take a few weeks to convince her that indoors is a safe place to be. At her temporary foster home, the toy basket was a great distraction and kept her from pacing nervously around inside the house. Aly will likely need to be house trained, although she had no accidents in this temporary foster home.
Aly loves car rides and walks, but she is leash naive and will need to be trained to walk with one. She is smart and wants to please, so training her to do anything should be easy.
Her family reports that she is NOT cat friendly.
Alyeska is being cared for in the Tri-Cities, WA area. If you are interested in meeting Aly, please submit an application and we will get your homevisit scheduled ASAP!
Update from Alys foster home:
Aly is blossoming. She is so very smart, one of the smartest I have seen. Aly is getting to be an expert at sitting, she knows her name and will come when called. On leash, she is a puller, but gets settled in after about 10 minutes into the walk. She can take treats nicely, is not food aggressive but will try to steal a rawhide or treat from the others. (And they let her). Alyeska is definitely the alpha dog here, and she likes it that way! She is learning that Ken and I are even above her in the hierarchy, and she seems OK with that too. She has a lot of energy, and likes to keep busy with toys - she likes her tennis ball, and will fetch and even sometimes let you have it back to throw again for her. Aly likes to chew - toys, rawhides, etc are handy to have to keep her from chewing things you do not want her to, and she likes to bury EVERYTHING she can get. I think she is a collector of sorts! Aly definitely needs to go to a home with NO cats or small dogs. Aly does fine with dogs close to her size or bigger, but smaller dogs are like cats to her. She does like to woo-woo and talk to you. Howling with sirens is fun for her too!
Foster mom update:
She has blossomed here and is coming into her own. The initial shyness and submissiveness she had shown is gone. Aly is an active girl, she does like to keep busy, she likes toys of any sort, and rawhides are good too. She is a digger, and does bury everything she can. Her, Balto and Scout (the resident Mal) get along famously, she is a good candidate for a home with another Mal or large breed dog. Aly is smart and eager to please, she wants to do the right thing to make the humans happy.

Keeper is currently located just outside of Olympia, WA

We are looking for a new home for them because they do not do well when boarded separately and we have had trouble finding a place that will board them in the same kennel. We travel a lot so, unfortunately, this will not work for us.
They need to go to a home together, preferably one with some room for them to run.

MahLi has one of those sweet happy faces that perfectly match her disposition. Her elderly owner became very ill and could not keep MahLi. She has not been around small children or small animals but seems to have the kind of disposition that would make an excellent companion dog for either a single person or a family.
She has not had much experience with other dogs yet and was quite defensive at first but that seemed to disappear within a day. However, her introductions to other dogs will and should be slow and easy as she gains confidence.
MahLi is said to be leash-trained and housetrained. She LOVES riding in a car, marches right into a crate and headed right for the dog rug in her kennel to quietly spend the night. She is VERY loving and people oriented. She is also surprisingly athletic - MahLi is so quiet and gentle and easy to handle it was a surprise to see how easily she could vault into a truck bed and how happily she danced for a walk! MahLi is quite a catch.

Yes, he surely was named for Tonka Trucks as he is a big-truck boy. When h is not busy melting in your arms. Tonka has a siberian playfulness and a malamute love of people. He is just over a year old and still has many puppy mannerisms but in his new home with the malamutes, he has quickly discovered that learning and respecting the rules gets him treats and playtime and pets and walks. And this is a smart boy.
Tonka will turn himself inside out for attention and pets. So far, in his new Mal foster home in Cle Elum, he is proving easy to walk and handle. He is a great mixture of sibe and mal - the strength and endurance of the mals and the grace and agility of the sibes. His huge snowshoe feet will be wonderful assets this winter for anyone who wants a snowplay companion. His coat is also absolutely perfect for snow. And he sheds down to a nice flat summer coat that will enable him to easily and comfortably accompany you in summer activities like mountain biking, hiking with just a little steady conditioning.
Tonka has shown himself to be good with children in supervised play and has been good in limited early intros with the malamutes in his Cle Elum foster home. He and Tundra have become play-n-pool buds. Tonka is capable of leaping tall buildings in a single bound but has not even challenged the short fences of his playyards. Add his eagerness to please to his striking looks, smarts, athletic potential, and love of play and he is a most attractive companion. Tonka may be eligible for the 3 month loan of a dog scooter and harness during his first adoptive year.
Tonka is currently being fostered in Goldendale, WA.

On top of her wonderful personality, Tia is ABSOLUTELY gorgeous, and those big brown eyes just melt your heart! She likes to prance and run around a bit, but is not interested in any marathon running! Mostly just happy if she can be with her human, after all she thinks she is one! It may take her a little to adjust to make sure you are not going to leave her, but she will make a truly wonderful companion for whoever is lucky enough to be able and add her to their family.
Tia is currently being fostered in Redmond, WA.

Jack N Jill are almost completely blind. They can see light and shadows - and love sunshine - but they have cataracts. We hope one of you will adopt them. We did not want them to die terrified in the shelter.
Their dispositions are amazingly good. Although they are still afraid of many things (like bath) they will put up with any kind of handling and love to ride in cars, go for a walk, or just explore the backyard. Jill is afraid of people (that does change with time) but LOVES the smells out a car window. Jack wants to play with people and likes to be brushed and handled.
Jack has bad rear knees also. But as neither of these dogs are likely to be your hiking companions, it hardly matters. In fact, they need very little to happily survive.
Jack N Jill are looking for a quiet home to live out their lives in peace.
They will probably need to be more outdoor than indoor dogs. They do love to walk and go for car rides and can be good companions for you for consistent secure activities. With their acute senses of smell and hearing, dogs can compensate very well for visual difficulties, particularly in familiar surroundings
Update from Jacks foster dad:
First let me say that both of them have come a long way toward being friendlier and much more trusting. They have adopted well to their kennel and especially to our play times everyday. They know that when I get home from work, whether it is in the morning after night shift or in the evening after day shift, the routine is that they get out of the kennel and have free time. They are very vocal now, both of them and they rush the gate on the kennel when they see me, or in Jack's case hear me, approach.
The cooler weather and getting used to their surroundings have allowed both of them to come out of their shell. Jack is a big ol teddy bear and his heart is all there. He wants to do so much more then his body allows. He gets excited about playing with Duke and Jill but he just can not keep up. He will play with me but even then I have to always stay in front of him, he just does not have any peripheral vision at all and very little actual site straight ahead. He sees movement but if I stop, even right in front of him I can see a confused look as he tries to figure out just where I am. He is a big boy and is pretty strong when he wants to pull, even with the bad knees. The strength is there but not the agility.
He takes his eye drops without a fuss, mainly because he can't see them coming until they are already in his eyes. I am still concerned about his skin. I brush him everyday and it has improved the feel of his fur to some extent but he still gets this brown scaly flakes all over his fur. I know he needs a good bath as well but he is a big guy to handle and he does not like to be in water or have it put on him. He can fight pretty hard, surprisingly hard.
Jack still seems to like being alone and laying in the sun or just watching from the front lawn. Jack has no desire to go past the front door, even when Duke and Jill go by him. He does not even want to hang around the porch, he likes being in the yard.
Jack is currently being fostered in Cle Elum, WA.

Jill is a real head turner. Everyone that has met her is very impressed with her looks, you can see from her pictures, she is gorgeous. Her personality has come out now as well. She loves attention, she listens and obeys when you call her name. She likes to explore but has also taken to playing with Duke, since Samson left. She will chase him around the house and around the barn, she does not like to get rough like Duke and Samson did but she loves the chase routine. She will come to me and snuggle right in for some attention and she even pushes Duke out of the way. She has learned that when both my wife and I are outside, she can go to the other for attention as well.
She sees very well, in reality. If you really pay attention to her, you can see that she takes a few things a little more cautiously then most dogs but if you did not know she had eye problems, it would be hard to tell. She does not like her eye drops but if I rub her belly then give them to her then rub her belly some more, then she tolerates them. She is a very sweet dog. She responds very positively to praise and gentle introductions. We have had a lot of company the last couple of weeks and she is a little hesitant at first but she does not run and hide like she was when I first got her. I think she has figured out that she can trust most humans as long as they do not approach her too aggressively. She has to sniff your hand a few times then she will come in to see if you scratch her ears then maybe a back scratch.
Jill definitely would prefer to be around people and she has been curious about the inside as well. I just started introducing her to being inside the house, she is still very tentative about being in new surroundings and does not settle in yet, we will see.
Jill is currently being fostered in Goldendale, WA.

Troy is a big, happy go lucky fellow. He is very alert and curious. He will do best as an only dog with a family with a well fenced yard. Troy will need a lot of training, but he is very even tempered and should be a quick learner. He loves being petted and groomed. He has thick fur and a big curly tail. Troy has walked around Green Lake and although the sled dog in him gives him a tendency to pull, a firm dog person can teach him to not pull so much. Troy is a beautiful dog who will be an excellent companion for an active person or family. He just needs someone who will work with him on his manners as he is a sweet natured boy.
Troy is currently in Maple Valley, WA

Balto is a calm dog but can still be puppyish. He is willing to please, and gets along well with most other dogs. He is a beautiful light reddish color, almost golden. He may be a mix but he is mostly malamute, however you look at him - size, temperament, eyes, tail etc.
As we learn more about Balto we will update his description.
Balto is currently being cared for in Tri-Cities. If you would like to meet Balto, please submit an application and we will schedule your home visit as soon as possible.
Update from Baltos foster home:
Balto is doing well, he is still quite the puppy! He is learning some manners, still tries to jump up on you but we are working on that one with consistency, knows how to sit, and knows his name and will come when you call him. Balto is smart, he wants to please and do the right thing, he just does not always know what that is! He is getting better at taking treats nicely, but still needs a little work. No food aggression between him and the other 2, he will give up without too much argument. On leash Balto walks as well as can be expected of a young Mal, he pulls a bit and tries to sniff EVERYTHING he can. He has not challenged the fence, even the 3foot 6inch section, nor has he tried to get out the gate when entering/exiting the dog yard. He is not a digger, except maybe to bury a rawhide, but if someone else (namely Scout) is digging he will join the fun. With the cats, I have not had a chance to give him a fair and true test, he follows Alys lead and will go after the cats if they get close enough. So at this point, I would have to say no cats or small dogs. Balto is fine with other large dogs close to his size or larger, he will bark a bit at intro and then is fine as long as the others are. He likes to howl with sirens, and he and Aly get a good chorus going!
Foster mom update:
He is a well-mannered young dog. A little excitable at times, but he is still a puppy. Balto would make a good watch dog, he does bark at times (when someone new is here, or when he gets excited and wants to play with us or the other dogs) but not excessive by ANY means. He does quiet down when you tell him to. Balto is a smart one, and he has learned some manners and tries his very best but sometimes forgets. He is calm for his age, and is content to lay or sit at your feet and get pets.

Update on Justus at his current home. Justus is a happy go lucky kinda boy. Does great off leash does not chase the cats and comes back when called. I had him out with me all day Saturday just roaming around the yard he stayed close and later came inside and napped on the kitchen floor.
He is gonna make somebody an AWESOME pet. He love kids and plays with mine all day today. He is still a little thin at probably 80-85 lbs...I still have my doubts that he will make a good sled dog...but he will be a great family dog for someone who want to work with his talkative nature.
Justus is currently living in Wenatchee, WA.

Blue is a mostly Mal, and is certainly going to be a giant when he finishes growing, as he is at 120lbs and not even a full year old yet. He would trick anyone into thinking him a purebreed, if not for those bright baby blue eyes of his.
Blue is currently being cared for in Redmond, WA.

Her couple thinks that she is just too young and active for that and they would like to find her a home where she can have her very own yard and family to play with and pester. And can be pestered in return. Dixie will also make a terrific activity companion if you want some to help you through the winter doldrums and to help you kick it in gear when spring rolls around. Her golden eyes are mesmerizing. Watch out though - there could be mischief and laughter in there as well intelligence and calm appraisal.
Dixie is currently with her owners in Ephrata, WA

Mocha is housetrained, does well with other dogs - currently hangs out with 3 pugs and was raised with a border collie. He will chase cats who run, but seems fine with his current caretakers. He is unknown with children since he has never been around them.
Mocha is somewhat protective of his people (unusual in a malamute). He is shy at first but very gentle with his people as well. He has lots of love to give.
Right now his caretaker is teaching him about crates and walking on a leash. He loves being an inside/outside dog.
Mocha is currently being cared for in Edmonds.

Libby is very laid back, is very loving, and will follow you around like a puppy. She has a gorgeous coat, gorgeous face and very expressive eyes. She also has a beautiful voice and if you work at it, you can get her to talk to you. Libby asks for affection and is immediately responsive when you join her in the yard - she wants to play but is not so good at it because she is a chubbette right now. She will be much more comfortable when she loses a little weight. Once you leave, Libby says: ah well, and just lays down to enjoy the day.
Libby has lived with female dogs and with dominant males but is wary of strange dogs. She has also been a family dog and has often been around children. She does not seem to have any bad people habits at all! We think she will make a wonderful companion and family dog.
As Libby just came into rescue, more details will be coming soon.
Libby is currently being kenneled in Maple Valley, WA.

Livia is a talker and if you are not paying enough attention to her she will let you know with her beautiful woo-woo! She enjoys walks, but leisurely walks, and is not going to pull you all over creation. She loves car rides and does great in a car uncrated.
It appears that Livia was not well taken care of as she has developed hot spots on her rear legs resulting in them being shaved for treatment. Once her fur grows back and she loses a few extra pounds, she will be a looker!
Olivia is currently being cared for in Maple Valley, WA. If you would like to meet Olivia, please submit an application and we will get a home visit scheduled as soon as possible

Duke has a beautiful woo, woo and seems to like everyone including kids. He has also done well while supervised with cats at his current foster home. Duke does not like to be alone in a kennel, he likes to be with his people. He loves riding in the car and sticking his nose out the window. He was a bit of a puller on leash at first, but learned to walk with a Gentle Leader right away and has not been a problem since. His foster mom reports that Duke likes to hang around in the yard and on the deck during the day, and sleep inside at night. She says Duke has been a perfect gentleman so far and she can not say enough good things about him.
Duke is currently being cared for in Maple Valley, WA. If you would like to meet Duke, please submit an application and we will get a home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

Tundra had a tough life before rescue. He shows signs of good early training and responds VERY well to affection and having a home of his own and good food. But we know that he spent much of his life in bad living conditions and was tormented by small children in both his earlier homes and when he was chained up. So Tundra is looking for a particularly loving and gentle home and is only a candidate for a home with children over 10 or no children. Active though! Play is good!
Tundra is currently being cared for in Cle Elum, WA. If you would like to meet Tundra, please submit an application and we will get a home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

Wolfie is a great outdoors dog who loves to play fetch, knows basic commands, and likes kids. He is a very smart dog, and probably the friendliest boy you will ever meet. Through no fault of his own, Wolfie was turned into the shelter when his former owner no longer had time for him.
Wolfie is currently being cared for in Maple Valley, WA. If you would like to meet Wolfie, please submit an application and we will get a home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

In Mayas first home one of her best friends was a cat. She was also said to be good in the car, good in the house and good in the yard, good with children. She is housebroken and if not allowed inside, will tell you with her big brown eyes what a mistake you are making. So why is she in rescue? Because like almost all malamute puppies, she cannot be in the house ALL the time and when outside, she needs a fenced yard to play with. Not a lot to ask.
She has the biggest brown eyes of any dog I have ever seen.
Maya is now in Seattle, WA.
If you would like to meet Maya, please submit an application and we will get a home visit scheduled as soon as possible

Denali is a very gentle dog, he’ll lick your face, then lick it some more. He wants to run, but he comes back when called, and is very easy to walk. Denali is a high energy boy, and would rather not be in a kennel or crate. He rides great in the car. He prefers to stick close to his humans, and let’s you know about it if you try to leave him behind.
Denali is currently being cared for in the Spokane, WA area. If you would like to meet Denali, please submit an application and we will get a home visit scheduled as soon as possible.

Princess can win your heart in an instant. She loves to lean into you and will roll over for a belly rub in a heart beat. She is now allowed out to play in the yard with the other dogs for a few hours a day (she had a cold). She is doing extremely well with them. She likes to be inside and stretched out on the carpet. She does not bother the cat until it runs and then she wants to chase but does not attack. It looks like she is trying to play.
She fits her name quite well and enjoys the finer things in life. She will not lick peanut butter out of the Kong unless you hold it for her. She likes to drink out of the fountain not the water bucket. She will never go to the bathroom in the kennel and will wait to be let out to do her business. She is definitely not a yard dog. She loves human interaction.
She is a little strong playing fetch with the other dogs but she is learning the rules of the yard quickly. She loves her kennel and runs in there to eat and sleep. She jumps in any car that has a door open and loves car rides.
She has not shown any agression toward the indoor or outdoor cat. She does like to get into a play stance with the indoor cat when it hisses, but she should be trainable with cats since she show no outright agression or chase mode.
Once she get cleaned up and brushed she is going to be every bit the Princess that her name implies.
Princess is currently in Spokane, WA

Nanuk travels like a pro in the car. He hops right in and doesn't make a noise. He knows some basic commands and just needs some work to keep the training sharp....and him out of trouble! Nanuk is a very high energy boy that will need plenty of exercise, and would love lots of attention and affection.
