A note from Rebecca, Bear's Foster Mum

All is well. Bear's doing fine, and it quite settled here. His leg wound is healing, although not as quickly as I had hoped. The deep part of the gash, in hindsight, probably should have been sutured a week ago, as it just doesn't seem to want to close on its own. He's in less pain though - limping much less, and more tolerant of having the bandages changed. He's remarkable in letting complete strangers mess with his owie - tells me just how mellow he really is.

He's really a family dog, always wanting to be inside unless Maia will go outside with him. But doesn't bark or whine if he is left outside, rather just waits patiently by the door. He's perfectly fine being left in the back yard with Maia when I have to leave the house - haven't seen any damage, although there is one new crater in that part of the yard, but it's in the middle so it wasn't an effort to get out of the yard. I've been reluctant to leave him in the back yard alone, however, preferring to crate him in the house when I leave taking Maia with me. (He does whimper a bit at that, but is always asleep when I return.) I just don't want him trying to jump out and hurting himself again.

I had been crating him at night, also, until Tuesday night when I awoke to go to the bathroom and nearly stepped on him! He sleeps beside the bed, now. He's been trustworthy in the house, never peeing or getting into trouble, although he did start to chew on my slipper once. He has peed in his dinner bowl (outside), and also in the water bowl in the back yard, which is annoying.

He's got lots of energy - loves to have Maia chase him around the yard, darting around the trees. They play nicely together, indoors and outdoors. The leg doesn't slow him down much when they're in play mode.

Tomorrow, if the weather cooperates, I think I'll take him to a nearby wooded park, on leash, to see how he reacts to that environment. They're be a few people, and probably a few dogs off leash there, so it'll be a good way to see how he reacts when he's on leash. I think having Maia there with him will help.

By word of mouth, a woman who recently lost to old age her Weimaraner wants to come meet Bear tommorrow. I suspect she'll take one look at his coat and reconsider. But if she seems interested, I'll refer her to you.

Another woman, who I see several times a week at the off leash park, came by once this week to help me change Bear's bandages and fell in love. But she couldn't convince her husband that they needed a second dog. Oh well.

I see there are several dogs on the WAMAL web site currently - too bad there are so many needing homes. The picture of Bear is good. He truly is a cutie.

Just wanted to let you know how Bear is doing. He is such a loveable, affectionate dog. The kids are alot more comfortable with him, although we still need to work on his possessiveness of toys and food when the kids are around.

Yesterday Scott stayed home sick all day. He said that he was laying on the couch and Bear came up to him with the thermometer in his mouth and handed it to him. Does he have nursing in his background? (:

We love him very much and are so glad he is with us.
