Matt,
Rescuing these noble and hysterically funny dogs is one of the great joys of
my life. Mahina is so different in looks (Cindy told me not to try to 'find'
Lishka again!) and her wooly coat is a daily challenge. She is so
dear...recent hip x-rays show arthritis, but buffered aspirin keeps her going. She was
running with me tonight for short distances.
She is gloriously beautiful...stops traffic where ever we go. Our walks are
not as long as they once were, but she finds such joy in going outside. She
does love the river and is so happy now that the days are getting much cooler.
The lower the temperature the more 'happy feet' she gets.
Here's a great part of our story. Her kitties, Bruddah and Sistah, go on all
the neighborhood walks with us. Sistah came first as a young kitten and
scolded her scairdy cat brother for whining when we left his area. She soon
talked him into joining us and now we are the neighborhood story. We look like a
bad Walt Disney movie...Mahina walking her cats each day and night! They also
ride in the car with her for trips to the vet! In the beginning it was a real
challenge to teach her these little fur balls were NOT yummy treats. However,
now they belong to her. One late night walk not long ago a big dog on the
loose chased the cats up a tree and Mahina went after him...bad hips and all!
We love you all who work so unceasingly for these wonderful snow dogs.
With Aloha,
Momi and Mahina

Akiya now Mahina looks nothing like when she came into rescue. Her new owner,
Momi is taking the best care of her and in turn, Mahina is restoring Momi's
spirit after her loss of Lishka to cancer not long ago. Momi also adopted
Lishka through us about 5 years ago. Here is a before of Mahina and some afters:

Mahina - The Life of a Rescue Mal
I Play Hard and Need My Rest
Hello New Family,
I am happy with my new mom. She gives me good treats. She hugs and kisses me
a lot. Sometimes she cries.
She gave me a bath in Mango Tango shampoo and I smell really nice. You can
see my hair growing; it's fluffy and curly. I'm learning to eat the raw food
diet...boy, do I ever love those raw chicken legs. Crunch and fling! Dinner made
me so happy tonight that I ran around the house (it's small!) from the LR
punee to our king sized bed. Slipping on the hardwood kitchen floor. Jumping over
the end of the brass bed footrails. I know I'm safe here with my new mom
forever.
Cindy (WAMAL Rescue Pres and malamute breeder) came to visit me today and
said I am a pure bred malamute. Good size. And not too skinny. She says my coat
is going to be thick and long and mom will have to brush me a lot. Mom likes
that. She tells me I am beautiful just the way I am. My coat will get snowballs;
not like Lishka's which didn't; she was the snow queen.
I went to the Icicle River with mom yesterday. Boy, was that ever fun! Little
fish in the water and I tried to catch them with my mouth. We ran at the
river's edge and made splashy waves. I like the river; it's really pretty and lots
of people wanted to know about me and my adventures. Mom told them my
story... then they'd pet me some more. Sometimes they got sad eyes.
I am happy.
Aloha,

Right now Akiya is a special needs girl. She was taken away from her owners by Animal Control due to extreme
neglect. She had been tied out in a field of cheat grass in Eastern Washington. The heads of this grass burrow
through fur and underneath skin causing abscesses if left untreated. Akiya had abscesses all over her body One
foot was so swollen she could not walk. Animal Control pulled out over 50 seeds from between 2 toes on that foot
And the long fur on the backs of Akiya's rear legs and on the back of her tail had grown so tangled with weeds that
they were matted together, pulling her tail down against her leg so that appeared crippled and was full of caught,
dried filth
To save her, Animal Control had to shave her down to her skin. You can see from her face that she will be an
exquisite dog in a few months. But in the meantime, she's in danger of sunburn, exposure and we are a tad worried
that the snows will come here in the mountains before her fur does! (I do have a coat made for a fur-challenged
malamute that will become Akiya's new fashion do's as the weather changes.)
Akiya is now playing, on her very first day here with her male foster dog friend, Woolly. She seems quite healthy
and happy when it's play, pet or dinner time. But she'd like a forever home where she can come inside if it is too
cold. Can you help?
