We are not accepting applications for adoption of Taikuu at this time.

Post surgery update! Taikuu is recovering tonight. A volunteer spent some time with her in her cage at the vet clinic and although she isnt very lucid, she did wag her tail. She was very quiet and peaceful when she was stroking her. The doctor thinks the break is about 2 weeks old. This would have been a very simple surgery if it had been done right away but the bone had started to heal. She had 2 pins put in her bone that will stay there permanently. In spite of all the odds he is still cautiously optimistic and we will all hope for the best. She has such a good spirit....her youth and strength are in her favor. Thank you to all those who have send in donations towards her care.
She will need surgery and then have a long recovery process, but right now we are asking for help towards the costs of her surgery and future vet care. Taikuu, which is an Inupiaq word for Thank You, ended up in a shelter last week in pain and with a severe leg injury that needed urgent care. We picked her up and over the weekend rallied to get her from Spokane across the mountains to Olympia where she is scheduled for surgery early this week. There is a fracture in the growth plate right above her right knee. The x-rays and vet report suggests surgery asap to correct as puppies this young start the fusion/healing process so quickly. Taikuu is a sweet, sweet girl who has been a bundle of love even through the pain she is going through.

If you can help Taikuu, please donate by Paypal on our Donations Page

When I see Juno, what comes to mind is the lyrics from the Antiskeptic song Beautiful in White. To feel alright, broken, restless, tired, the fear of flight. Have I told you that youre Beautiful in White? Juno, formerly known as Yo Yo, has spent his life in the back yard of a restaurant and is very shy around humans right now. So shy that the shelter thought there was no option to adopt him out, so he was going to be euthanized. We pulled him and have had several volunteers working with him. Juno has a very sweet face and a gorgeous coat. He takes treats very gently, and even planted a kiss on one of our volunteers the other day. Juno seems to be much more comfortable around humans if he is with one or two of his own kind. He gets along well with other dogs and does well on a leash and is much more open to being petted when out on walks with other dogs. He is looking for a family with patience and a lot of love to share. We think when he comes around he will make a great walking and hiking companion for a medium activity family. Juno is in an experienced foster home and will soon be tested with cats. We have no history on how he is with kids yet. We do know he can scale a 6 ft fence, so will need a securely fenced yard possibly with a hot wire on top.

If you think this handsome white boy is the one for you, please fill out our online application and we will schedule your home visit asap.

Juno is being cared for in Shoreline, WA.

Kelsey is a stunning gentle lady with beautiful coloring and a nice thick coat. She was brought home after being abandoned and wandering a church parking lot for weeks. At some point in her past life it appears the two lower bones in one of her front legs have been broken and not treated. Her leg has healed now, but she has limited paw movement in that leg. She does walk with a limp, although it does not seem to bother her at all. She will never be a runner, but Kelsey loves walks and does great on them. She shows no aggression towards other dogs, and even seems a bit shy around them. She loves people too, although is hand shy probably due to a rough start in life. We think Kelsey will thrive once she is in a loving gentle home and allowed to feel like a part of a family. Once she realizes humans can be kind, she will pay you back in spades with Mal loving.

Kelsey has been examined by a veterinary ophthalmologist and been diagnosed with cataracts. She has cataracts in both eyes, resulting in loss of vision in her right eye. The left eye cataract is less severe so vision is currently unimpaired. At this time it is unsure if surgery is a possibility as additional testing is needed to evaluate the right eye retina. Kelsey does not experience any pain or discomfort as a result of her condition and it has not slowed her down at all, although she does display a bit more hesitation when outside at night. It is truly amazing how dogs like Kelsey just adapt to lifes short comings. To see a recent story on a blind sled dog please click here.

Are you the family Kelsey has always been waiting for? Please fill out an application and we will schedule your home visit asap.

It will turn my life upside down!
Read about Sponsorship here.

While he doesnt swing from trees yet, this tall, and aptly named happy boy covers a lot of ground quickly with his long stride. He is very athletic, again, he is named Tarzan for a reason! Tarzan loves to hike and run in the woods. He cannot wait for snow play to show off how well his big, wide feet will do to keep him moving. He is ready and waiting to hike, bike, ski and pull your sled! Tarzan is a very striking boy with unique markings and beautiful eyes. He is very playful but does settle rather quickly, knowing when playtime is over that it is time to settle down. He loves to rest his head on your lap and have his ears scratched, or long strokes down his back. He loves loving! Tarzan is initially a puller on the leash, but relaxes into a walk or run after a short time. Introductions to other dogs have gone well, although they need to be done slowly as he does like to dominate if given the chance. He is a big eater and gets very excited at meal times. He likes to enjoy his food in peace so needs to be fed separately from other dogs. Like many Mals, Tarzan does not like cats so will need to go to a home without any. He has never challenged the fence or dug holes in the yard at his foster home and is generally a very happy and well behaved boy.

If you would like to offer this striking boy a forever home, please fill out our online application and we will schedule your home visit as soon as possible.

Tarzan is being cared for in Goldendale, WA, but arrangements can be made to meet him in the Seattle area too.

Spunky got her name for a reason! She loves to play with other dogs, male or female. Her first contact with humans was with catch poles and a small crate, so she is a happy girl as long as no one looks like they are going to catch her. Spunky has come a long way since being rescued from a breeding operation last fall, and by living in a great foster home, she is learning to trust humans and is now ready to find her new forever home. She has some great basic manners such as sitting for treats, and walking great on a leash, and is housetrained. She will need at least one other dog to play with to get her used to her new home. You will need to be patient with this beautiful girl until she gets used to you, then you better watch out for a lifetime of love and play! Spunky is a cheap date who loves nothing more for toys than an empty Kleenex box or some cardboard to run around the yard and play keep away with.

Are you the person who will show Spunky how to continue loving life? She is waiting for you! Please fill out our application and we will schedule your home visit as soon as possible.

SI
Age: Adult
Weight: 110 Lbs
Gender: Male
Color: Black/White
ID: WO7-0110-AM5

Stunning Si is about as perfect a Mal as they come. He is a large active boy who gets along with cats, other dogs and all humans. He is house trained and has been through TWO levels of obedience classes so knows all his basic commands. As you can see by his photos, Si loves to hike with his back pack and show off his incredible temperament with everyone he meets on the trail. Si has had constant love and consistent vet care all his life and is as well adjusted as they come. Why is Si looking for a new home then... He is a victim of the economy, and after months of consideration and prayer his family has concluded they are no longer able to provide him with the quality of regular care and maintenance he needs. They are heartbroken, but know that Si has a new forever home out there just waiting for him.

Si has been diagnosed with and immune mediated disorder which causes him to have severe eye issues, such as swelling, inflammation and discomfort. He has responded well to medications and returns to normal. What cause these flair ups is truly not know but is likely linked to vaccinations so it has been recommended that future vaccinations be avoided. Instead of vaccinations your veterinarian can have titers (a blood test) to check his level of protection. Si also has trouble swallowing some types of food and is currently being fed a home cooked diet.

Si has never met a person or creature he didnt like, he loves everyone. He has grown up with two cats and a baby in the house. If you think Si sounds like the perfect addition to your family, please fill out our online application and we will schedule your home visit as soon as possible.

Si is being lovingly cared for in Redmond, WA.

POOH BEAR
Age: Adult
Weight: 120 Lbs
Gender: Male
Color: Black/White
ID: WO55-1109-AM5

Pooh Bear is a classic, gorgeous boy looking for a new home because he wants a home with no other dogs or only a larger female canine companion. No cats please, they look like snacks, and because of his size he would like a family with older kids. Pooh Bear loves, loves, loves kids and all people. He is also looking for a job like hiking, snowshoeing or jogging. He is housebroken and knows some basic commands too! Because of Bears longer coat he will need some consistent grooming, which isnt his favorite activity. An experienced Mal home may be able to offer him treats to teach him that brushing is a good thing. Pooh Bear will need a secure 6 foot fence because he likes to go visiting when the opportunity arises.

Dont miss out on this beautiful boy! If you think Pooh Bear is the guy for you please fill out an online application and we will schedule your home visit asap.

ALICE
Age: Youth/Puppy
Weight: 50 Lbs
Gender: Female
Color: Black/White
ID: O3-0110-AF1

Got Goats? No? Good, because this young girl thinks they are snacks and is now looking for a new home. Alice is a very young girl who had a litter of pups at an early age, but has now been spayed. She is great with people including kids and seems to get along well with other dogs although is not overly interested in playing with them. Alice is housetrained and has spent a lot of time inside her current home. She also does not seem to mind the cold, rain and snow that comes with spending some time outside. Alice needs some supervision in the house while still in her puppy stage as she tends to see any toy as a chew toy. Alice has a beautiful, thick coat with swirled silver sable markings, and very large feet. She has soft floppy ears and mesmerizing dark eyes. Alice does pretty well on a leash and when shes happy she bounces way up in the air like a bouncy bunny!

If you live somewhere besides goat country, and have a securely fenced yard, Alice may be your forever girl. WAMAL is posting this girl for another rescue so please contact us at wamal@wamal.com for information on how to meet her.

POLAR
Age: Adult
Weight: 90 Lbs
Gender: Male
Color: Gray/White
ID: WO13-0210-AM4-0210

All that is missing from this photo is the cats and kids! Polar is a very sweet, very smart dog who does well at doggy daycare, knows his basic commands and is housebroken. He loves other dogs, gets along with cats and has lived peacefully with cats. Polar is an accomplished escape artist though, and will need a very securely fenced yard, possibly with hot wire to keep him from his explorations. He would also like a daily JOB such as a long run, hiking, biking or snowshoeing to burn off some of his energy. The ultimate home for Polar would be one with at least one stay at home human as he suffers from separation anxiety and cannot be left alone in the house without supervision as he can be very destructive. If you are not home every day, daycare works for Polar too!

Are you an active family that wants a dog that can keep up with you then spend time loving on you in the evenings? Want a Mal but havent found one that works with your small dogs? Please fill out our online application and we will schedule your home visit asap.

Polar is located in the Seattle area.

Sweet, sweet Callah, with her cute floppy ears and soft coat, is about as close as they come to a perfect Malamute. She is a little on the small side and has an absolutely great personality as well as perfect doggie manners. She is so full of love and smiles that you cant help but be happy around her. She plays fetch and loves to bring the ball back to you, stopping just long enough to give you a huge sloppy kiss. She is great on leash and comes when you call her. She loves her hugs and all the love you can give her, she just soaks it all up. She has the perfect amount of energy and a great temperament, not too hyper and not too laid back. From what we can tell so far Callah seems to like other dogs, and we will be testing her for her reaction to cats in the next week or so. She is great on leash and loves car rides too. From what we can tell she will be great with kids.

We think Callah will be adopted in a Mal Minute, so if you are interested in her please fill out our online application and we will schedule your home visit asap.

Oh Grandma, what big ears you have! Young Glaciers mom was a Malamute and dad was a German Shepherd but he looks mostly Mal to us. This very shy boy does not want to be left alone outside and does really well with other dogs of all ages and sexes. He has also lived with kids and cats. We have pulled him from the shelter where he was very scared, but in the same kennel as five other dogs. When we visited him there he was nervous, but did come over for some petting and scratching from our volunteer. We are hoping that he will come around fairly quickly in his new foster home through interaction with other dogs and cats as well as some intense snowshoeing activity and plenty of loving. We will update his bio once we know more about any training he might have and if he is housebroken. He would most likely do best in a quiet but fairly active home where he is allowed to get used to his new family slowly.

Can you turn his frown upside down? Please fill out our online application and we will schedule your home visit asap so you can meet Glacier.

Athenas former owner describes her as gentle, loving, loyal, sweet and a very free spirit. She is housebroken and spends time inside as well as outside, but loves to sleep indoors at night. She loves going for walks or runs and we are working on her leash manners now. Athena knows all her basic commands such as sit, lay down and shake as well as the Malamute come where she runs up to you, teases you, then runs off again. Look into those Angel eyes. We have named this pretty girl after the Archangel Ariel, Lioness of God. Ariel is feeling very sad right now as she has spent several weeks in a shelter waiting to be adopted. She is ready to be moved now and find a loving family that will teach her that humans can be kind. Ariel is said to be very sweet and somewhat shy. She does not care for other female dogs, but we are as yet unsure how she is with males, kids or cats. Once she is transported from Spokane to Kent we will have a much better idea of her personality, and will add her info here. Right now we are looking for a foster home for her on the west side of the mountains.

Can you offer Ariel a foster or permanent home? Please contact wamal@wamal.com if you are already an approved foster, or fill out an online application and we will schedule your home visit asap.

Ariel is currently located in Ponderay, ID and will be transported to Kent on Thursday Jan 28th

Cool Hand Luke made two things crystal clear right away. He loves people and he hates being alone in the kennel. Sooo, then we learned that he can get along with other dogs, because he opened that pesky kennel so he could play with the 2 malamutes in the Big Yard. No fights, just happy campers. Luke would do best with a playmate his own size.

Open a car door and he heads right for it - people is where it is at for Cool Hand Luke. When Luke went down to the vets office for his little procedure he easily put his front paws on the chest high counter in order to greet all the wonderful people on the other side. After that he showed his manners by stepping nicely onto the scales and sitting!

For such a young dog, he is remarkably laid back. He walks very well on leash, mostly leaving some slack. But the scent or sight of wildlife can really get him excited. He will not be a candidate for a home with cats. He sits, he comes, and picked up lie down after a couple of tries, he is so very smart and willing. Luke is bullet proof house trained and knows how to use a doggy door.

Luke loves riding in a car and quietly takes his place behind the front seats. He recently went to a meeting and after greeting a couple of people gently he just lay down and relaxed for the following two hours. He is totally as delightful as his pictures.

Luke is being cared for in Spokane.

Kenya came into rescue as a stray from a shelter after being picked up by animal control. Although he finds the soft pads in the walk in dog house to be irresistible, Kenya also loves to play with humans and enjoys other dogs as well. And this big boy is a dream to walk. He enjoys walking, trots along and is very easy to manage.

Kenya is a big boy, sturdy and very tall, but does not throw his weight around. Clearly not a young dog, he seems far younger than the original shelter estimate. He loves being petted, does the malamute lean, and will bounce around the yard in play any time you invite him to do so. He is not pushy, Kenya is very polite, but he is always ready for play. And just loves being gently teased and teasing in return. Kenya has a terrific coat for winter activity and big snowshoe feet.

Timber has very handsome facial markings, and is just so darn cute and loving. He has had an interesting start in life by living in a two bedroom apartment with five kids! So we know hes good with kids and most likely housebroken. He keeps escaping when the kids open the door though, probably due to boredom and the need for exercise. He will need a securely fenced yard and may love a dog buddy to horse around with during the day. He rides well in the car and is ready to learn some basic manners at your local obedience class. Timber would probably love an active family that can give him the regular exercise a young boy like him needs. Keep an eye on the site because we will have much better photos of Timber in the next few days, as well as a little more information on his personality.

Timber is looking for a forever home where he can run and run and play. If you can offer this home to Timber, please fill out our online application and we will schedule your home visit asap. Max is doing well in his new foster home, he has made friends with foster brother Scooby and all the kids. He has excellent house manners! Stays off furniture, doesnt beg, asks to go out, no pacing or worrying. He will cruise the counters though, but no more than any dog will. He also has an beautiful quiet inside woo, and is learning to ride in the car quickly (he has discovered his foster parents and foster brother Scoobys morning visits to the mocha stand where they give out cookies and ear scratches). He now jumps into the truck to go for a ride. He has some fear of adults, but there has already been an improvement. Oddly enough, he is not afraid of teens and 20ish folks, only older people. Max is getting used to leashes, and once on leash walks really well for a young exhuberent boy. He has become the jogging partner for the 16 year old in his foster family. He is a really great dog, and a great family dog. He will do better in a smaller family that is willing to work with him and give him the love, attention and exercise he needs. It will only be a matter of time and positive experiences for him to be great. Max is definately interested in cats, so definately no cats for him, but he would most likely like a fur brother to play with.

Dont miss out on this great boy! If you think Max is the ONE for you, please fill out an application and we will schedule your home visit as soon as possible.
