Alaskan Malamute (medium coat)
Dog /Female
NOOKA is a very fun and sweet girl who needs daily exercise to help her release all her malamute energy. For this spry 8-year-old gal exercise is very crucial! She loves walking/hiking with a backpack as it gives her the little extra exercise she needs while on walks and helps her focus. It takes her time to warm up to new people and Nooka seems to favor females. She’s not much of a snuggler, is independent and can be left alone at home for hours without causing any damage. She also loves her crate and sleeps in there all night with no problem. Nooka would do best being the only dog in the house and in an adult only home. As most malamutes do, she has a very high prey drive so no kitties or small furries. Nooka is great at telling you when she needs to go out to the bathroom. Her voice is really beautiful, and she is not afraid to use it. She loves to sing and be heard. Overall, she is a great girl who would be best in a house with people who are highly active and would get her plenty of exercise. Approved adopters are encouraged to communicate directly with the foster to learn more.

RANDY is a big healthy 10-year-old mal looking for his perfect family! Do not let his age fool you--he has the energy of a 2-year-old! This guy is strong, super smart and will do best in an adult only home. Randy loves attention and really adores people. He has great house manners and will not destroy nor chew items, is house trained and knows his commands in both English and German. His best day includes lots of walking, hiking and activity. He rides great in the car, jumps in and out with ease and loves to have the window cracked to stick his head out. Randy enjoys his food but can be reactive if someone tries to take away food wrappers etc. so he needs a committed owner to continue the positive progress he is making in his foster home.  He can get reactive at the sight of other dogs and needs a careful handler while on leash. His foster says that, after some time with her, Randy has grown comfortable enough to show his goofy and playful sides! Check out my Instagram from my time in foster @thefluffyfoster

BETTY is a big red-headed beauty that absolutely loves attention!  As soon as you start petting her, she leans in and rolls down your legs to get on her back to ensure she gets that belly rubbed!  She is well-mannered and walks well on leash, which is good since she weighs 100 pounds!  She knows some commands including sit/stay, shake, and down and will happily do them until she is on a leash - then it is all about her exploring and walking.  She will enjoy short regular walks to build up her stamina.  She was uninterested in a couple other dogs introduced to her, even when they were sniffing and trying to engage.  With that she may do well with another dog in the home, but would likely not mind being your one and only!  Betty came into a local shelter as a stray so we don't know a lot about her but we do know she is gentle, sweet, happy, and is deserving of a home of her very own where she can be pampered!

CASH is ready to live the good life after winding up in a crowded CA shelter and spending some time on death row. This special 4-year-old male loves people and is ready to go on adventures! Cash will need an experienced adopter who has dealt with resource guarding behavior and who can be attentive to his known triggers and how to manage him around food and toys. He is a smart pup and knows sit, down, touch, stay, come and shake already and will enjoy learning new tricks with his new owner. Regular exercise will be an important key to satisfying Cash’s energy and mental stimulation needs. A home with no cats, young kids or other dogs would be the best for him. Cash is good with other dogs but his resource guarding needs would require his new home to give him their undivided attention to help him be a good family member. Cash is currently in the Seattle area and the option of several supervised visits prior to adoption, along with in-home training sessions from his current dog trainer are highly recommended for learning effective management/training techniques. Cash is being lovingly cared for in Washington while he awaits his new forever home.

KANGA wants to be your adventure buddy! This fit active boy loves going places and being out in public--outdoor restaurants, walks, hikes—and adores his car rides!  Kanga, once he knows you, loves giving licks and kisses and is super affectionate…you just need to let him initiate in the early days while he is building trust.  This pup has had a challenging past and he just needs to know you can be count on to pay attention to his physical cues when he’s feeling overwhelmed or unsure. Kanga has no issue being left alone for 3-4 hours and is happy to sleep in your bed or anywhere as long as he can be close to you. Kanga won’t do well in an apartment setting with cramped stairways or elevators, so we are looking for a home setting for him with a secure yard. As far as other dogs, Kanga can be choosy so we are looking for a home where he can be Fuzzball King of the Castle!  Definitely NO cats and young kids are iffy too.  Dog savvy teens may be ok as long as they are aware of Kanga’s “dog language” and can give him space when he needs it.  This boy just wants to love and trust somebody so badly!! For now, we are being cautious about having Kanga in a home with other dogs. He has exhibited some guarding issues in his foster home with the resident dog so we are saying no other dogs in the home. Same for no cats and no young children. Our goal is to find the best home for Kanga and one where his chances fo...

KYIA is looking for a malamute experienced adult-only home. This special malamute is believed to have had a previous owner that may have been abusive and is very cautious about people coming into her home. The WAMAL volunteer that met her met in a park and was able to walk Kyia. She is picky with her dog friends and may be best as an only dog. She is a known food thief and has been known to open microwaves and toaster ovens - smart girl! Despite these challenges she is a lovely malamute that will do well with consistent training and exercise. At five years young she has lots of energy and is ready to go on adventures! She comes house and crate trained. The adoption fee of $400 includes spay-neuter and all vaccines.

MS. HANNAH is our picture perfect Diva! She is a strong-willed Alaskan Malamute mix with one of the cutest fuzzy faces around. Being a true example to the breed Hannah likes to test her limits occasionally. As such she will require an adopter who has a good understand of pack rules and a loving yet firm hand during training. Hannah loves a long hike as much as a Netflix and chill night on the couch. Her favorite snack is cheese curds. So if you have access to Beechers Handmade Cheese she would like to meet you immediately. Hannah loves being with her humans and so if she is left for long periods of time may try to escape to find the company of another person to spoil her. Hannah needs an escape proof home environment (Fort Knox like since she is a master at creative escapes). She is a bit cool towards other dogs and would prefer to be your one and only in true Diva fashion. Cats and young children are probably not a good mix for this girl.  Hannah is being lovingly cared for in Washington while she awaits her new forever home.

SADIE is a lovely adult malamute that wants to be your one and only!  She has been well cared for and loved; however, has to find a new home due to an incident with another dog.  Other than needing to be an only pet and careful around other dogs, she really has no other issues.  She walks well on leash and knows a number of commands - and even follows them quite well on leash and about half the time when not on leash.  (The other half of the time off leash she wants to convince us she just didn't hear the commands...oh malamutes!)  On walks, she does well with the 'wait' command, though will pull to get to another dog, so needs someone strong enough to keep her from doing that.  She enjoys pulling carts, which is good, as she needs exercise to lose a little extra 'fluff'.  This friendly girl loves people and has spent time with older children that she did very well with.  Sadie enjoys attention and getting pets and belly rubs.  She likes to play with toys and will bring a toy over to encourage playtime.

SILVER is from a really sad situation where she was left on their own for at least two years at a construction site.  Food and water were not always available, and she sought shelter and shade under a variety of construction vehicles.  Silver came into rescue and was given a thorough vet exam and much needed bath and grooming!  While the volunteers were at first timid about interacting with these "wild" pups, Silver soon won them over!  She is gentle, loves attention and easy to walk on leash.  Very chill and laid back this pup deserves a place to call home where she can be spoiled, and she can get all the love she has missed out on.  She can be uncertain and protective around other dogs so would love to be in a home without other pups and definitely no cats.  She loves kids and seems to actually prefer kids to adults according to our volunteers who brought their children out for dog socialization.  This pup is quite food driven but needs to lose a few pounds so a healthy diet will help her out immensely.  Looking for that chill, loving older Mal?  Silver could be your girl!!

SPIKE is a young adult malamute mix that was struggling in the shelter environment after his owner needed to rehome him.  The shelter got in touch with WAMAL and he is now ready for his forever home.  In the home environment, Spike was described as being playful and enjoyed leaning in for pets.  He spent most of his time outdoors and got along with all family members.  When he first arrived at the shelter, he did well with the vet staff and was friendly until he was to be re-kenneled, which he tried his best to avoid!  We expect his behavior was primarily driven by his confusion in the environment and believe he will settle back into a home environment.  We will continue to assess him around other dogs and he may enjoy a canine companion in his new home.  Spike is ready for a savvy owner to take him on adventures and welcome him into his new family!  Check out my foster Instagram @spiketakesahike

COURTESY LISTING MEET APRIL April is an 11-year old petite, blonde husky. She is shy with handlers but gaining confidence and starting to seek out more petting and attention. She likes gentle base of the ear and neck rubs. She gives gentle little check-ins with her nose to my masked nose when I kneel to her level. She is more courageous in the presence of other dogs. April helped encourage some of the huskies to leave their kennels when they first arrived at WHS. She is social with other dogs but sometimes attempts to manage the group. The other huskies seem to accept her management. She has met new dogs in playgroup and will mingle and run with them for a bit. She doesn't appreciate rough and rowdy play and will correct other dogs when they initiate it. April's adoption fee is $100.00.    April is currently with Willamette Humane in Oregon. COURTESY LISTING.  ICICLE is residing with Genny so for more info please contact her directly: gennybreon@gmail.com 515-227-9092 Icicle is a 5 ½ year old male Mal/Husky mix. He is black, white and grey in coat color and has one blue and one brown eye. Icy currently weighs in at 74 pounds.  Icicle, who is recovering from dual TPLO surgery is currently residing with his foster family who became his legal owner when the rescue they were fostering him for refused to get him the follow up medical attention he needed.  The foster/owner family cannot keep him because they have other dogs and Icicle wants to be an only dog. Genny shares: “Icicle is loving and sweet, handsome and smart, but he’s an only child kind of pup. We don’t know much about his past other than he was abused by his “owner”.  He’s very shy in the beginning when he first sees people, but with women he warms up really quickly. With my husband, it took him a little bit to trust him but never once was Icy aggressive or anything--he just retreats or hides, poor guy.” Icy likes car rides and loves his leash walks.  He may pull a bit in the beginning because he is so excited to go but quickly settles. Icicle knows his basic commands, is house and crate trained. He is gentle accepting treats and loves to play with toys, his favorite being balls and his plush bunny.  Typical to his bree...

COURTESY LISTING   MEET MIDNIGHT Midnight is a 4-year-old spayed female. She is affectionate and likes to give kisses. Now that she is receiving regular meals, she is starting to exhibit Husky enthusiasm and drive. She asks for attention by pawing and leaning/cuddling into her handlers. She has shown some barrier reactivity with other dogs. She met Yukon on a leash a couple of weeks ago and presented by rushing into the meet, her head over Yukon's shoulders, and growling. We called the dogs away from each other. She was able to settle, work with her handler, and within about fifteen minutes, show a loose, relaxed body when training and playing games with her handler while within a few feet of Yukon. We gradually decreased the distance between the two dogs during this session. She has mingled with dog tolerant social dogs in the yard but would rather spend her time with people! Midnight's adoption fee is $100.00    Midnight is currently with Willamette Humane in Oregon.
